About the job

What We Do

Handil is building Messaging 2.0 — a privacy-first communication platform designed around simpler communication, smarter connections, and greater user control.

We believe messaging should feel more intentional.

Not every contact needs to stay forever.
Not every file needs to remain on your device.
Not every interaction should require sharing your phone number.
And users should have more control over how their conversations, media, and data are organized and stored.

Handil is being designed around privacy-focused connections, username and QR-based interactions, user-controlled storage, smarter media management, and communication experiences that adapt better to real-life needs.

Our goal is to make communication feel simpler, clearer, and more user-controlled.

Who We Look For

We’re looking for an experienced UX Designer to help shape how people experience Handil from the very beginning.

You’ll work closely with product, engineering, and design teams to understand user behavior, identify friction, simplify complex communication workflows, and turn product ideas into intuitive experiences.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving real user problems, asking the right questions before jumping into screens, and designing experiences that feel natural without requiring explanation.

You should be comfortable moving from research and problem definition to user flows, wireframes, prototypes, usability testing, and design iteration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct user research to understand user needs, behaviors, motivations, and pain points.
  • Translate research findings into clear product and UX opportunities.
  • Create user journeys, information architecture, user flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes.
  • Design intuitive experiences across messaging, connections, media, storage, and information management.
  • Help define how users connect through contacts, usernames, QR codes, and other privacy-focused experiences.
  • Simplify complex workflows into clear and understandable interactions.
  • Plan and conduct usability testing and incorporate findings into design improvements.
  • Validate design assumptions before and after implementation.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and visual/product designers.
  • Participate in product discovery and help shape product requirements from a user-experience perspective.
  • Identify usability problems and recommend practical, user-centered solutions.
  • Define interaction patterns and help maintain consistency across the product.
  • Ensure accessibility and inclusive-design considerations are incorporated into product experiences.
  • Create clear specifications and design documentation for engineering teams.
  • Review implemented experiences and work with engineers to maintain design quality.
  • Continuously improve the product using research, feedback, analytics, and real-world usage.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5–8 years of professional UX design or product design experience.
  • Strong experience designing consumer-facing mobile applications.
  • A portfolio demonstrating user-centered problem solving and end-to-end design thinking.
  • Strong proficiency with Figma and modern prototyping tools.
  • Experience conducting user interviews, usability testing, and qualitative research.
  • Strong understanding of interaction design and information architecture.
  • Experience creating user journeys, flows, wireframes, and prototypes.
  • Ability to simplify complicated concepts and workflows.
  • Strong understanding of mobile UX patterns for Android and iOS.
  • Experience collaborating closely with product and engineering teams.
  • Ability to communicate design decisions clearly and explain the reasoning behind them.
  • Strong attention to detail without losing sight of the overall user journey.
  • Comfort working in an early-stage environment where ideas and priorities can evolve quickly.
  • Strong empathy for users and curiosity about why people behave the way they do.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing messaging, communication, social, collaboration, or consumer productivity products.
  • Experience with privacy-focused or security-sensitive product experiences.
  • Experience designing onboarding, identity, connection, contact, or account-management flows.
  • Experience with offline-first or multi-device mobile experiences.
  • Experience designing file, media, cloud-storage, or content-management workflows.
  • Experience contributing to or building design systems.
  • Experience working on 0→1 products.
  • Previous startup experience.
  • Experience using product analytics and behavioral data alongside qualitative research.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and inclusive-design practices.
  • Experience working closely with native Android and iOS engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted design, research, or prototyping tools.

These are helpful, but we don’t expect one person to have experience in every area.

What You’ll Help Shape

As a UX Designer at Handil, you’ll have meaningful influence over experiences such as:

  • How users discover and connect with other people.
  • How username-based connections work.
  • How QR-based connections feel and behave.
  • How users understand privacy and connection permissions.
  • How conversations are organized.
  • How temporary and long-term interactions are handled.
  • How users manage photos, documents, files, and other media.
  • How storage choices are communicated.
  • How users understand what stays locally and what they choose to store elsewhere.
  • How complex privacy controls can remain simple and understandable.
  • How first-time users learn Handil without unnecessary friction.

You won’t simply be polishing screens after decisions have already been made.

You’ll help shape the decisions themselves.

How We Work

We believe strong UX begins before the interface.

We value designers who ask:

  • What problem is the user actually trying to solve?
  • Why does this step need to exist?
  • What information does the user need right now?
  • Can this workflow be simpler?
  • What assumptions are we making about user behavior?
  • How will users understand the consequences of this decision?
  • Are we asking users to share information that isn’t actually necessary?
  • Does the experience still make sense for someone seeing it for the first time?

We value thoughtful design over unnecessary complexity.

We also believe good UX comes from collaboration. Designers at Handil work closely with engineering and product rather than handing off finished screens at the end of the process.

Why Handil

Communication products are used constantly, which means even small UX decisions can have meaningful impact.

At Handil, you’ll have an opportunity to help define a product while its fundamental interaction patterns are still being created.

You’ll be able to influence:

  • Product discovery
  • User research
  • Information architecture
  • Interaction design
  • Connection experiences
  • Privacy experiences
  • Mobile workflows
  • Design standards
  • Product usability
  • Long-term user experience direction

If you enjoy understanding real user problems, simplifying complicated experiences, and building products from the ground up, we’d love to hear from you.
