The Opportunity:
We are currently seeking a Traffic Engineer II to join our West Palm Beach, FL office.
This role is ideal for an experienced traffic engineering professional who is passionate about improving transportation safety, mobility, and operations through innovative, data-driven solutions. As a Traffic Engineer II, you will contribute to a variety of traffic engineering and Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSM&O) projects, including smart work zones, while working alongside experienced professionals and multidisciplinary teams.
You will have the opportunity to apply your technical expertise in traffic operations, signal systems, transportation safety, modeling, and data analytics to support projects throughout Florida. This position offers the opportunity to take on increased technical responsibility, collaborate directly with clients and agencies, and contribute to transportation solutions that improve how people move throughout their communities.
What You’ll Do:
As a Traffic Engineer II, you will define and manage technical assignments involving signal timing, corridor and arterial operations, TSM&O studies, Smart Work Zones, ITS, safety, mobility, and data-driven operational improvements. You will evaluate transportation data, develop traffic solutions, conduct operational and safety studies, and translate technical findings into practical engineering recommendations.
In this role, you will collaborate with FDOT, local agencies, project managers, engineers, and multidisciplinary teams to evaluate transportation challenges and develop effective solutions. You will also prepare technical reports, presentations, and performance dashboards while contributing to the successful delivery of traffic engineering and TSM&O projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze transportation data, including traffic volumes, travel times, traffic signal controller data, crash data, and other operational performance measures.
- Perform traffic engineering analyses related to safety, mobility, traffic operations, speed management, and multimodal transportation systems.
- Support traffic signal timing evaluations, corridor operational assessments, and arterial management initiatives.
- Conduct traffic studies, MOT review, operational assessments, and transportation system performance reviews.
- Lead Smart Work Zone planning, deployment, data analysis, and performance evaluation.
- Assist with the development and visioning of TSM&O performance measure dashboards and reporting tools.
- Analyze pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and vehicular data to support transportation planning, safety, and operational improvements.
- Utilize traffic analysis and simulation software to evaluate existing conditions and proposed transportation improvements.
- Develop technical reports, memoranda, exhibits, presentations, and recommendations based on transportation data and engineering evaluations.
- Collaborate with FDOT, local agencies, clients, and multidisciplinary project teams to develop practical transportation solutions.
- Present technical findings and recommendations to project teams, clients, agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Support project managers and senior engineers with technical assignments and project delivery activities.
- Assist and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and engineering staff as appropriate.
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required; Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in traffic engineering, transportation engineering, or traffic operations.
- Experience supporting FDOT projects and familiarity with FDOT standards and procedures preferred.
- Experience in or willingness to expand proficiency in Synchro/SlimTraffic ability to understand output from modeling and apply to operational signal timing. HCS, VISSIM, CORSIM, SIDRA, or similar analysis tools nice to have but not required.
- Experience with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD nice to have.
- Familiarity with transportation data analytics, performance measurement programs, traffic operations studies, and TSM&O principles.
- Knowledge of AASHTO guidelines, the MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), Highway Safety Manual (HSM), ADA requirements, and applicable transportation design standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate complex transportation issues and develop practical, data-driven recommendations.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments concurrently.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing and presentation development.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.
