Position Title: Technical Solutions Engineer
Department: Technical Solutions
Compensation: $85,000 - $135,000 + annual bonus (range varies depending on location; paid in local currency)
Reports To: Technical Solutions Manager
Location: Remote – Canada or USA
About the Role:
The Technical Solutions Engineer will play a key role in supporting the development, evaluation, and integration of utility-scale energy storage systems (ESS) with a focus on battery technology and performance in integrated systems. This role supports both internal product development and external solution customization, ensuring seamless operation and coordination between the Battery Product, Inverters, EMS and grid interface.
This position requires deep fluency in battery cell and pack-level degradation mechanisms, the ability to translate degradation curve behavior into commercial and contractual strategy (warranties, guarantees, storage/charging requirements), and the judgment to drive design and process improvements back into the product roadmap. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable building degradation models in Excel/Python, defending assumptions in front of an Independent Engineer, and sitting across the table from R&D to push for a design change.
This role supports both internal product development and external solution customization. For internally developed solutions, the engineer will work closely with R&D, global engineering to provide direct input on design features, validation strategies, and system sizing requirements. For externally procured products, the focus will be on leading technical due diligence, ensuring standards compliance, and transferring product knowledge to internal engineering, applications, and execution teams.
Responsibilities:
Technical Due Diligence and Product Development
- Lead the technical review of new battery cells and sub-components being evaluated for integration into our solutions, including specs, drawings, sizing, certifications, and test results.
- Work closely with procurement, product management, and R&D teams to support alignment between product design, supplier capabilities, and commercial rollout.
- For internally developed products: collaborate with R&D and technical teams to support design development, interface definition, validation testing, and product roadmap alignment.
- For externally sourced products: lead evaluation of technical specifications, certifications, and performance claims; ensure alignment with internal architecture and support cross-functional knowledge transfer.
- Maintain traceability of vendor/product documentation, internal evaluations, and solutions status through internal tools and documentation systems.
- Oversee the development and enhancement of internal engineering tools to support system modeling, product validation, and solution optimization efforts.
- Support Independent Engineer (IE) reviews and customer-led technical due diligence by preparing documentation packages, addressing compliance concerns, and representing internal design rationale.
- Monitor and interpret evolving product standards, test requirements, and performance expectations relevant to battery and energy solutions — including UL, IEEE, IEC, and other applicable regional or application-specific standards — and ensure alignment across internal designs and documentation.
Battery Performance & Degradation Strategy
- Own and evolve degradation modeling methodology and strategy in externally facing degradation curves for product and system warranties.
- Maintain and improve internal degradation and throughput tools (capacity models, throughput analysis, duty cycle tools etc.) ensuring accuracy across models, chemistries, and climate conditions.
- Serve as the primary technical liaison between project and performance engineering and R&D, feeding field/factory degradation insights and failure trends back into cell selection, thermal management, and DC Block design decisions.
- Monitor and interpret emerging battery chemistries and design (e.g., winding/stacking, blade cells, sodium-ion) for their degradation, safety, and warranty implications, and assess their fit against existing performance guarantee structures.
Cross-functional Support and Customization
- Coordinate cross-functional communication to introduce new products to internal stakeholders, including engineering, project execution, and commercial teams.
- Lead internal discussions with engineering, product, and software/controls teams to troubleshoot control strategies and support platform optimization.
- Provide technical input and coordination for project-specific requirements, custom feature requests, or client-specific configurations.
- Contribute to the development of internal documentation, reference templates, and knowledge-sharing tools that support consistent product execution across regions.
- Collaborate closely with global R&D and applications engineering teams, to align on feature roadmaps and deployment readiness.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, materials science, electrochemistry, or a related discipline; preference given to candidates with a postgraduate degree in engineering.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in engineering, R&D, or product management within battery storage, battery cell development, or related industries.
- Direct experience in battery product development, cell testing, or energy storage applications is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of LFP battery cells, DC Blocks, and Energy Storage Systems
- Familiarity with key standards and certifications related to batteries and ESS products, including UL 9540, UL9540A, UL 1973, UN 38.3, IEC 62933, IEC 62619, and other applicable codes or testing standards.
- Experience collaborating with international partners, particularly engineering or manufacturing teams across global time zones.
- Demonstrated ability to lead or contribute to the development of internal engineering tools, system models, or automation processes.
- Strong technical, analytical, and troubleshooting skills, with a hands-on approach to product validation and integration.
- Proficiency in Mandarin is a plus but not required.
Key Competencies
- Ability to collaborate effectively across diverse, cross-functional teams and international time zones.
- Strong technical communication skills, with the ability to navigate discussions across internal teams and represent engineering topics in customer or Independent Engineer (IE) reviews — particularly in coordination with R&D counterparts across Asia, North America, and Europe.
- Experience with product onboarding, technical documentation review, and vendor qualification processes is highly desirable.
- Excellent organizational skills, and clear written and verbal communication across global teams.
- Flexibility to travel, including international travel as required (up to 15%) for vendor assessments, integration testing, and industry events.
