The CBA technology unit delivers the best digital banking services to Commonwealth Bank customers and to do so is responsible for digital delivery, group data and analytics, technology and technology infrastructure, cyber, fraud, physical security and business resilience for all divisions across CBA. It is also dedicated to delivering the best workplace technology experience for our over 53.000 people across CBA and focused on providing the latest tools, technology, and resources to enhance the way we work together and empower our people to achieve more for our customers.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the technical evolution of our systems contributing to design, development and deployment of our systems to CBA’s Merchants business customers. You’ll work across the full software development lifecycle (SDLC) and be invited to our regular engineering guilds to broaden your expertise and contribute to the engineering culture at CBA.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Drive strategic programs of work, including proof-of-concept development, and provide technical strategy, governance and guidance across the solution delivery lifecycle.

  • Lead complex engineering initiatives, ensuring solutions are sustainable, aligned with approved frameworks, industry standards, and business and technology strategies.

  • Champion engineering excellence through process improvement, strategic practice development, adoption of new tools and technologies, and contribution to internal engineering knowledge.

  • Provide technical leadership and consultancy across projects, platforms and delivery teams, including ownership of technical assets, roadmaps and strategic direction within areas of expertise.

  • Mentor and upskill engineers across squads, uplift development practices, and lead teams through complex troubleshooting and technical challenges.

  • Support the reliable operation of systems, products and platforms, including participation in On-Call rosters and ownership of critical issue resolution when required.

Essential Skills:

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these (or equivalents) will set you up for success in this team:

  • 11-14 years of experience delivering Java solutions in complex enterprise environments, ideally within banking or financial services.

  • Backend: strong hands-on experience with Java, SpringBoot

  • Docker and Kubernetes experience.

  • APIs: REST, SOAP, OpenAPI Specs

  • Database: PostgreSQL, DyanmoDB (NoSQL)

  • Cloud: AWS Mandatory

  • DevOps, CI/CD and Full Cycle Engineering: CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, Octopus.

  • Leveraging IaC tools like Terraform or CloudFormation

  • Observability: Experience with monitoring and observability tools like Prometheus/Grafana, Observe, AWS CloudWatch.

  • Architecture: Sound knowledge of large-scale distributed systems, Microservices, and Rest API Integration.

  • Solid grasp of best practices in application and system security, backed by demonstrated experience in overseeing multitenant environments and addressing associated security challenges. AI & Machine learning and LLM knowledge is desired.

  • GenAI tools and Agents – Cline/Roo Code, Cursor, AWS Bedrock. Experience in BIAN architecture – desired        

  • Frontend (secondary skills): React.js, Next.js                          

Education Qualification: Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in engineering in Computer Science/Information Technology
