Rockhurst University is currently seeking a Staff Accountant to join our Finance Office. The Staff Accountant performs a variety of professional accounting work related to the preparation and maintenance of accounting and financial reporting records and financial functions related to budget and annual audits. The position requires knowledge of fund accounting, independent judgement and decision-making skills. Duties will include journal entries, reconciliations, monthly and annual close processes, financial reporting, and audit and compliance support.
Duties include daily, monthly, and annual accounting functions. Responsible for providing financial information to the VPFA, Controller, departments, grant managers/writer, board and committee members, and other related duties as assigned within the scope of the classification level. Staff Accountant is the mid-level class in the professional accounting series. Initially, under close supervision, incumbents perform the more routine accounting duties while learning policies and procedures and becoming familiar with a variety of departmental systems and practices. As experience is gained, duties become more diversified and are performed under more general supervision.
Specific responsibilities include:
- General Ledger & journal entries – prepare and post standard monthly journal entries and maintain general ledger accounts.
- Account reconciliations – perform monthly balance sheet, bank, and other payment reconciliations
- Month-end close – assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing procedures, including accruals and adjustments.
- Financial reporting support – support the compilation of financial statements, variance analysis, and management reports.
- Audit – provide supporting documentation and schedules and answer questions during internal and external audits.
- Compliance – ensure transactions and reports follow company policies and standard accounting regulations.
- Other duties as assigned – perform other duties, consistent with the incumbent’s skills and qualifications as required by the University in support of the department.
Position requirements include:
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with major course work in accounting, finance, business administration, or a closely related field with two years working experience.
- Two years of accounting experience with knowledge of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and General Ledger as well as general office operations.
- Exceptional organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines
- Comfortable working independently and collaboratively.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience with databases and data management.
