Our client, a leading Middle East banking group, is looking for a Senior Technology Engineer to own the engineering lifecycle of its backup, storage, and cyber recovery platforms. You will design, build, automate, and run a standardised stack of infrastructure products used across the organisation. The environment is high availability, high transaction volume, and globally distributed, so resilience and recoverability are non-negotiable.
The role sits in a matrix structure, reporting to the head of the infrastructure engineering function while working within a platform squad that drives delivery across design, development, implementation, standardisation, automation, and capacity planning. The ideal candidate is a T-shaped engineer: deep in Linux and data protection, broad enough to move across DevOps, cloud, and virtualisation as projects require.
Key ResponsibilitiesData Protection and Cyber Recovery
- Design, implement, and maintain enterprise backup and recovery solutions across on-premise, virtualised, and cloud workloads
- Build and operate cyber recovery capabilities, including isolated recovery vaults, immutable backups, air-gapped copies, and ransomware recovery testing
- Define and enforce backup policies, retention schedules, and RPO/RTO targets aligned with regulatory and business requirements
- Run regular restore and DR drills, and document recoverability evidence for audit
- Manage storage capacity planning, performance tuning, and lifecycle of storage and backup infrastructure
Technology Engineering
- Act as the Linux subject matter expert, covering hardening, patching, and OS compliance against security baselines
- Automate deployment, configuration, and backup operations using Infrastructure as Code and configuration management tools
- Manage virtualisation environments and their integration with backup platforms
- Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure, storage, and application issues with development and operations teams
- Configure compute, storage, and networking services on Azure, AWS, or OCI, including cloud native backup
Delivery
- Own projects from inception to production, covering design, build, test, handover, and BAU support
- Apply DevOps, SRE, IaC, and 12 Factor principles to infrastructure delivery
- Integrate platform components into CI/CD pipelines
- Contribute to technology stack reduction and platform cost optimisation targets
- Handle BAU incidents and root cause analysis for backup failures and storage issues
Stakeholder Management
- Work with the wider infrastructure team to keep deliverables consistent across platforms
- Collaborate with the security function to align with security standards and contribute to design forums
- Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and manage expectations under pressure
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or related field
- 10+ years in infrastructure engineering or operations, with at least 3 years in a similar senior role
- Strong hands-on experience with enterprise data protection platforms such as Commvault, Veritas NetBackup, Dell PowerProtect / Avamar / Data Domain, Veeam, Rubrik, or Cohesity
- Practical experience with cyber recovery solutions such as vault architectures and immutable storage
- Expert Linux administration (RHEL, Oracle Linux, or similar)
- Solid understanding of enterprise storage (SAN, NAS, object storage)
- Experience with virtualisation technologies, ideally VMware
- Infrastructure as Code experience, preferably Terraform, plus configuration management with Ansible or similar
- Exposure to Kubernetes or OpenShift and backup of containerised workloads
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and integrations
- Hands-on configuration of public cloud services on Azure, AWS, or OCI
- Experience in large, complex enterprises with high availability requirements, ideally banking or financial services
Desirable
- Certifications such as Commvault Professional, Veritas NetBackup, Dell Data Protection, RHCE, VMware VCP, CKA, or Azure/AWS associate level
- Knowledge of banking regulatory requirements around data retention and resilience
- Scripting in Python, Bash, or PowerShell
- Self-starter with strong initiative
- Calm and methodical under pressure, especially during incidents and recovery events
- Pragmatic and outcome focused
- Willing to learn and adopt new technologies
- Clear, structured communicator
