Senior Software Engineer

Kinomatic is seeking a highly capable Senior Software Engineer to help build the next generation of our cloud-based surgical planning, visualization, and patient recovery platform. This is a senior individual contributor role for an engineer who combines strong full-stack technical depth with sound judgment, ownership, and technical leadership.

You will work across frontend, backend, cloud infrastructure, data, interactive 3D applications, and AI-enabled workflows. You will contribute directly to production software while also helping shape architecture, technical standards, development practices, and engineering decisions across the team.

This role is designed for an engineer who can grow into a trusted technical lead for major areas of the platform. You will work closely with the Director of Software Engineering, other technical leaders, Product, and cross-functional teams to translate complex business and clinical problems into maintainable, scalable software solutions.

Responsibilities 

• Design, build, deploy, and support production software across frontend, backend, cloud infrastructure, data, and interactive 3D applications.
• Lead technical design and implementation for features and system components, from initial problem definition through architecture, development, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing support.
• Grow into ownership of major technical areas of the platform, serving as a trusted delegate for architecture and implementation decisions.
• Contribute to software architecture and system design decisions that support scalability, security, performance, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
• Lead and participate in technical design reviews, code reviews, and architecture discussions.
• Mentor less-experienced engineers and help improve technical judgment, software design, debugging practices, and development effectiveness across the team.
• Partner directly with Product and other departments to clarify requirements, evaluate tradeoffs, and develop solutions that align technical execution with business objectives.
• Make sound technical decisions in situations involving incomplete requirements, ambiguity, changing priorities, and competing constraints.
• Use modern AI-assisted development tools, including coding agents, as an integrated part of the software development workflow while maintaining strong engineering judgment and verification practices.
• Build and integrate production software systems around AI and machine learning capabilities, including APIs, workflows, data pipelines, inference services, and cloud infrastructure.
• Improve engineering practices including automated testing, CI/CD, observability, documentation, development tooling, and software delivery processes.
• Balance engineering quality and long-term maintainability with product velocity and business value.
• Help establish and uphold a high standard of engineering excellence, ownership, and accountability.

Education 

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field is preferred but not required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and supporting production software systems.
• Strong full-stack development experience with TypeScript and React.
• Strong backend development experience with Go.
• Strong experience with relational database design, data modeling, and performance optimization, preferably with PostgreSQL.
• Experience building and operating cloud-native applications on AWS or similar cloud platforms, involving serverless technologies and patterns.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code, automated CI/CD pipelines, production monitoring, logging, observability, and troubleshooting distributed systems.
• Strong understanding of API design, authentication, authorization, application security, and modern access-control patterns.
• Strong software architecture and system design skills, including the ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs and make pragmatic decisions.
• Experience developing interactive 3D applications and a strong understanding of foundational 3D graphics concepts such as coordinate systems, transforms, vectors, matrices, cameras, and rendering.
• Demonstrated professional experience using AI-assisted software development tools and coding agents effectively as part of day-to-day engineering workflows.
• Demonstrated ability to independently work through ambiguous technical problems and drive solutions from problem definition through production deployment and support.
• Ability to distinguish between necessary engineering rigor and unnecessary complexity, with a focus on delivering maintainable solutions that create business value.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across multiple layers of a system.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to provide technical leadership without formal authority through sound judgment, collaboration, mentorship, and example.
• Comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment where requirements and priorities may evolve.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with medical imaging standards and workflows, including DICOM.
• Experience developing software in regulated or compliance-driven environments such as HIPAA, SOC 2, or FDA-regulated product development.
• Experience building immersive, real-time, or browser-based 3D visualization systems.
• Experience building software platforms that integrate AI/ML inference or computer vision capabilities into production workflows.
• Experience working in startup or high-growth environments where engineers operate with significant autonomy, ownership, and adaptability.
