The Role
Designs and owns propulsion engine components and assemblies from concept through released drawings, manufacturing, assembly, and testing. Responsibilities include Siemens NX modeling, GD&T, design for manufacturability, machining and fabrication support, test-data-driven iteration, and collaboration across thermal, fluids, structures, and materials disciplines. The engineer works closely with shop and test teams to rapidly build, evaluate, and improve compressors, turbines, combustors, housings, and related hardware.
Summary Generated by Built In
Volund is building propulsion for America’s next industrial revolution.
We design propulsion systems for cost, agility, and scale, combining advanced automation, precision manufacturing, and rapid iteration to move from prototype to production at unprecedented speed.
Intelligent manufacturing is engineering at scale.
At Volund, engineers operate across the full stack, from concept and simulation to process code and machine execution, ensuring that what is designed can be built and what is built can be scaled.
Role:
This isn’t a pure CAD seat. We need a mechanical engineer who owns engine component designs from first sketch through released drawings, then stays with them while they’re machined, assembled, and tested. You’ll design parts that have to survive real temperatures, pressures, and speeds—compressors, turbines, combustors, housings, and the hardware that ties them together. If a design is hard to make, hard to assemble, or likely to fail in the test cell, you fix it before it gets that far.
What you’ll do:
You have a track record of taking a real problem, designing a solution, and getting it built. Maybe you designed and machined a part for a personal project, built a custom piece of equipment because nothing off the shelf worked, or redesigned something at work after the first version didn’t survive testing. You closed the loop between the model and the physical part. We want to hear those stories. That matters more than years of experience or a perfect résumé.
Who you are:
We know nobody checks every box. If you have solid design experience, real Siemens NX proficiency, and a history of designing things that get built, we want to hear from you.
Must have:
$175,000 - $250,000 USD
The salary range above is an estimate only with final amount being dependent on a wide variety of factors. All roles include a generous equity package and the following benefits:
As a government contractor, we also take affirmative action to employ and advance qualified women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and protected veterans.
Please note that employment with Volund Manufacturing, Inc. is subject to compliance with U.S. export control laws and regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Due to the nature of our work, all candidates must be U.S. persons as defined by ITAR (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)).
We are committed to providing reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities and for sincerely held religious beliefs, in accordance with applicable law. If you require an accommodation to complete the application or interview process, please contact Human Resources at 714-488-7393.

If a design is hard to make, hard to assemble, or likely to fail in the test cell, you fix it before it gets that far.
What you’ll do:
- Design engine components and assemblies in Siemens NX, from concept layouts through detailed models and released drawings
- Own the design process end-to-end: requirements, concept tradeoffs, detailed design, GD&T, and release into the PLM system
- Design for how the part will actually be made and put together—machining, additive, welding, brazing, or whatever the process requires
- Work with the shop and the test team to turn designs into real hardware quickly, then learn from what breaks or doesn’t fit
- Iterate based on test data, manufacturing feedback, and assembly experience
- Support light-off, characterization, and development testing by being in the loop on how your hardware actually behaves
- Cross into adjacent disciplines (thermal, fluids, structures, materials) when the design needs it

You closed the loop between the model and the physical part. We want to hear those stories. That matters more than years of experience or a perfect résumé.
Who you are:
- A designer who builds. You use Siemens NX as a tool to make things that exist in the real world, not just on a screen.
- Comfortable in a shop. You’ve spent time around machining, fabrication, or assembly and understand what “easy to make” actually means.
- Ownership-minded. You take a design from concept through released drawings and care about what happens after the drawing is issued.
- Curious and resourceful. When something doesn’t work or can’t be made the way you first imagined, you dig in—talk to the machinist, look at the test data, change the design, and try again.
- Fast enough. Once the direction is clear, you produce clean models and drawings and keep the work moving.
We know nobody checks every box. If you have solid design experience, real Siemens NX proficiency, and a history of designing things that get built, we want to hear from you.
Must have:
- B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent experience)
- 3–7 years of mechanical design experience, with meaningful ownership of parts or assemblies
- Strong Siemens NX proficiency (modeling, assemblies, drawings)
- Experience designing for manufacturability and machining
- Hands-on fabrication or assembly experience (shop time, personal builds, or equivalent)
- Demonstrated ability to take designs from concept through released drawings
- Must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen or permanent resident) due to export control (ITAR) requirements
- Experience with gas turbine, turbocharger, or other high-speed rotating machinery components
- GD&T and formal drawing release experience
- Familiarity with Siemens Teamcenter or similar PLM
- Exposure to additive manufacturing, welding, or high-temperature materials
- Any personal projects where you designed and built something that had to work

- Unlimited PTO
- Lunch and fully stocked kitchen
- Relocation assistance (depending on role eligibility).
- 401k Savings Plan
- Real responsibility from day one; your work goes straight onto running hardware
