Job Summary & Responsibilities

Pennoni is hiring a Senior Project Manager to join our MEP team in Newark, DE.

This is an opportunity for an experienced MEP professional who wants to take on a broader leadership role while remaining closely connected to project delivery. You’ll help lead and develop our MEP team, provide technical direction, and manage complex projects from concept through completion.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys both sides of the role: leading people and leading projects. You’ll mentor and support engineers and designers, help coordinate team resources and priorities, and continue serving as the Project Manager and technical leader for projects involving laboratories, R&D facilities, higher education, central utility plants, commercial buildings, and other technically challenging facilities.

Job Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop an MEP team, providing day-to-day technical guidance, mentorship, workload coordination, and support to engineers and designers.
  • Remain hands-on with project delivery, serving as Project Manager and technical lead for multidisciplinary MEP projects from initial planning and design through construction.
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, quality, staffing, client communication, and subconsultant coordination.
  • Provide technical leadership for the design of HVAC, mechanical utility, plumbing, and related building systems.
  • Review and approve drawings, specifications, calculations, reports, and other technical deliverables while contributing directly to design efforts when needed.
  • Coordinate mechanical work with electrical, structural, architectural, and other disciplines to deliver integrated project solutions.
  • Partner with team leadership to balance project demands, staff assignments, deadlines, and overall workload.
  • Mentor engineers and designers and help strengthen the technical capabilities of the MEP team.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, understand their technical and business needs, and serve as a trusted project partner.
  • Prepare proposals, scopes of work, project estimates, and responses to client RFPs.
  • Support business development efforts by expanding existing client relationships and identifying opportunities for new work.
  • Monitor project financial performance, including budgets, billings, profitability, and accounts receivable.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 12+ years of experience in MEP consulting engineering, building systems, or a closely related environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading MEP project teams and managing complex engineering projects.
  • Strong technical background in HVAC and mechanical utility system design, including equipment sizing and selection, system layout, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Experience performing and reviewing engineering calculations, including heating and cooling loads, psychrometrics, duct static pressure, and hydraulic calculations for piping systems.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable building and engineering standards, including ICC codes, ASHRAE, NFPA, and other relevant requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, clients, and team members simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and client relationship skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing, mentoring, or providing technical leadership to MEP engineers and designers.
  • Experience with laboratory, R&D, higher education, central utility plant, and/or complex building projects.
  • Experience with plumbing system design is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Revit and BIM-based project delivery; AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience is also beneficial.
  • Experience with HVAC load and energy modeling software such as Trane TRACE.
  • Active participation in professional organizations such as ASHRAE or ASPE is a plus.
