STR’s Cyber Division is hiring a Senior Machine Learning Researcher (MLR) to be part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers dedicated to developing cutting-edge technologies with significant and immediate impact on our national security. We are seeking a Senior MLR with proven technical skills in topics such as probabilistic methods and optimization methods that are crucial for developing modern machine learning technologies and applications.

The ideal Senior Machine Learning Researcher will have a deep sense of curiosity and will be motivated to work within a team structure to develop technical solutions in a rapid prototyping and results-driven environment. If you excel in researching the academic literature to identify, reduce to practice, and extend emerging and novel solutions, we especially encourage you to apply. The ideal MLR will also be proficient with programming in at least one high-level programming language (Python or equivalent) for building models in support of experimentation and development. The development of these models and technologies is highly benefited by both sophisticated theoretical understanding of applied math topics such as probabilistic models and optimization algorithms as well as by hands-on experience with ML algorithms. We are looking for a MLR who can combine their depth of understanding of the various topics with hands-on implementation of various techniques. We are particularly interested in Researchers that have experience in generative models for deep learning in domains such as computer vision, speech generation & recognition and natural language processing.

We expect the tools and techniques we develop and deliver to meet the highest standards of quality, maintainability, and reuse. Therefore, experience with sound software engineering principles and software unit test methodologies is valuable. We are looking for a Senior MLR to bring experience, creativity and entrepreneurship to technical project teams while spearheading the growth of current and new research areas.

Duties will include:

  • Identifying promising algorithmic approaches to open ended problems
  • Working on / leading small research teams to develop machine learning architectures and models for novel applications
  • Implementing solutions in Python (PyTorch / TensorFlow)
  • Delivering high-quality software in a team environment
  • Communicating technical ideas and implementations through reports and presentations

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance
  • PhD (preferred) or MS + 2 years’ experience or BS + 5 years’ experience -- in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Proficiency in one or more deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
  • In-depth theoretical understanding of deep neural networks as well as its applications, in computer vision and natural language processing in particular
  • Experience using collaborative source code management tools (Git)
  • Comfortable developing and presenting technical material
  • Experience architecting, training, and testing machine learning solutions


Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Active Security Clearance
  • Experience with techniques for Video and Audio synthesis
  • Experience developing research concepts from proposal through implementation and transition
  • Familiarity with software build and scripting tools
  • Understanding of signal processing or information theory
  • Motivated collaborator and effective communicator to both technical and non-technical audiences
