Join our fast-paced and passionate team as a Senior Electro-Mechanical Engineer. As we scale, you will be instrumental in building our foundation from the ground up. This is a dynamic, hands-on role for a self-starter who thrives in a fluid startup environment. You'll have the opportunity to work on cutting edge technologies, work closely with leadership, and develop and implement engineering practices that support our mission and growth. Your key responsibilities are as follows:
- Work independently and in a team while communicating with the manager, project engineer and the teammates. Will mentor junior engineers.
- Execute complex engineering tasks involving planning, preparation, data/information collection and analysis and decision-making in a process involving peer reviews and documentation of the results.
- Use tenacity, patience, self-discipline and passion for excellence to assure accuracy of execution schedule, data quality/integrity, conformance to company best practices, clarity in communication and documentation.
- Use every opportunity to grow competency through mentorship, curiosity, communication, exposure and initiative.
Requirements
- This position requires access to export-controlled information. Employment is contingent upon the applicant being a U.S. person as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3).
Experience:
- A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Physics, or a related field. Masters preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, ideally within a startup or technology company.
Skills and Responsibilities:
Interconnect & Component Specification
- Specify and source high-density electrical connectors, RF co-axial connectors, optical fiber connectors (e.g., MPO, LC), and hybrid electro-optical backplanes.
- Define cable bundle characteristics, including wire gauge (AWG), shielding (EMI/RFI protection), bend radii (especially critical for fiber optics), and jacket materials appropriate for thermal and regulatory compliance.
- Manage and maintain the Electro-Mechanical Bill of Materials (BOM), ensuring all connectors, strain reliefs, and cable assemblies are fully documented and sourced.
Electro-Mechanical Integration & Cable Routing
- Design complex 3D routing pathways for both electrical power/signal cabling and sensitive fiber optic patch cords within standard 19-inch racks or custom enclosures.
- Implement effective strain relief, cable management arms, and routing accessories to ensure reliability during system servicing and slide-out rack operations.
- Incorporate strict Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) shielding and segregation practices to prevent power cables from disrupting sensitive photonics signals.
Cross-Functional EE/ME Collaboration
- Act as the primary engineering bridge to the Electrical Engineering team, co-designing physical PCBs to enclosure interfaces, ensuring pinouts match physical connector layouts, and ensuring adequate high stability cooling.
- Translate electrical schematics and block diagrams into physical wire lists, cable drawings, and schematic-to-3D routing layouts.
- Collaborate on power distribution unit (PDU) placement, busbar routing, and grounding/bonding strategies for the entire rack.
Structural & Thermal Design for Photonics
- Design rugged sheet metal rack enclosures, sub-chassis, and mounting brackets capable of supporting heavy components while minimizing structural vibration to internal photonics modules.
- Collaborate on thermal management strategies (forced air, liquid cooling, or thermoelectric coolers) to ensure the precise temperature stability required by photonics components.
- Conduct or supervise tolerance stack-up analyses for high-density blind-mate connections on backplanes.
- Demonstrated successful execution of engineering tasks including use of mechanical CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and quantitative analysis/programming tools (Python, Matlab), and finite element analysis tools (ANSYS Workbench or similar).
Startup Mindset:
- You're creative, flexible, and eager to wear multiple hats.
- You're passionate about building systems from the ground up and comfortable with ambiguity and change.
