Senior Director of eSoftware Engineering – Ultra-Low-Latency C++ / Equities Technology
Your opportunity to make a real impact and shape the future of financial services is waiting for you. Let’s push the boundaries of what's possible together.
As a Senior Director of eSoftware Engineering in JPMorgan Chase’s Commercial and Investment Bank, you will join the Equities Electronic Trading Technology team as a core, hands-on engineer on our ultra-low-latency trading platform. You will design, build, and optimize the latency-critical C++ that powers our electronic trading business, spanning the core platform, high-performance market data, order execution, and market-making systems that price and quote equities and equity derivatives.
This senior-leadership-backed investment in our people and platform will help define the next generation of electronic trading. Our engineers work across ultra-low-latency trading technology, systematic trading, next-generation high-performance market data, and the core platform that brings them together. Disciplined prioritization and research-driven product development guide this work.
If you have deep expertise in low-latency C++ and want to write code whose performance is measured in nanoseconds—with a direct impact on clients and the business—this is the team for you.
Job responsibilities
Designs, builds, and optimizes latency-critical components of the core trading platform in modern C++, including the threading and event-processing model, inter-component messaging, memory management, and networking layers that market data, market-making, and execution applications are built on
Partners with traders and quantitative researchers to build and evolve electronic market-making systems, including quoting and quote management, real-time pricing and hedging, and pre-trade risk controls that meet regulatory and firm control requirements
Treats latency as a measured quantity: builds instrumentation, benchmarks, and profiling into the platform, and drives down tail latency and jitter through data-driven optimization
Works across the software/hardware boundary, including CPU caches, NUMA, core isolation, kernel-bypass networking, and hardware timestamping, partnering with infrastructure and network engineering on host and colocation tuning
Develops secure, high-quality, well-tested production code, reviews and debugs code written by others, and helps set the platform’s engineering standards for performance, correctness, and design
Owns systems in production, diagnosing issues quickly during live trading and automating remediation of recurring issues to improve operational stability
Adds to team culture of diversity, opportunity, inclusion, and respect
Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills
Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 10+ years applied experience. In addition, 5+ years of experience leading technologists to manage, anticipate and solve complex technical items within your domain of expertise and more broadly across the organization
Expert-level modern C++ (C++17/20), including templates and compile-time techniques, object lifetime and memory management, and a strong understanding of the code the compiler generates
Hands-on experience designing, building, and operating latency-sensitive production systems, with a track record of measurable latency or throughput improvements
Deep understanding of software and hardware interaction, including CPU caches, the memory hierarchy, branch prediction, and NUMA, and their effect on latency and jitter
Strong multithreading and concurrency skills, including the C++ memory model, atomics, and lock-free data structures such as ring buffers and SPSC/MPMC queues
Proficiency in Linux systems programming and networking (TCP, UDP multicast), and with performance tools such as perf, gdb, eBPF, or VTune
Strong computer science fundamentals in data structures and algorithms, and how they perform on real hardware
Disciplined engineering practices, including automated testing, code review, and CI/CD
Scripting skills (e.g., Python, Bash) to automate development, testing, and analysis tasks
Hands-on, day-to-day experience with Specification Driven Development and with working alongside AI agents across the full software development lifecycle, from specification and design through implementation, testing, and code review
Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills
Electronic trading experience in one or more of cash equities, listed derivatives (options and futures), or fixed income, with a solid understanding of market microstructure
Experience developing high-performance market data feed handlers and order books for equities, listed derivatives, and fixed income venues, processing high-volume multicast data with deterministic latency at peak market volumes
Experience developing high-performance market data feed handlers and order books for equities, listed derivatives, and/or fixed income venus, processing high-volume multicast data with deterministic latency at peak market volumes and specific experience with exchange market data protocols (e.g., Nasdaq ITCH, Cboe PITCH, OPRA, CME MDP 3.0, NYSE Pillar, …)
Experience with electronic market-making or principal risk-trading systems, such as quoting engines, auto-hedging, and real-time risk management
Working knowledge of FIX and native binary order-entry protocols (e.g., Nasdaq OUCH, Cboe BOE, CME iLink 3)
Experience with kernel-bypass and accelerated networking (e.g., Solarflare Onload/ef_vi/TCPDirect, DPDK), hardware timestamping, and PTP
Experience with event-driven, message-passing architectures (e.g., actor or active-object models) and design-by-contract techniques
