Description:

Who we are:

At Gladstone Institutes, every role contributes to discoveries that have the potential to transform lives.

Gladstone is a world-renowned independent, nonprofit biomedical research organization dedicated to solving some of the most challenging diseases affecting humanity. Our scientists are leaders in neuroscience, cardiovascular disease, immunology, stem cell biology, and emerging areas of biomedical innovation. Located in San Francisco's vibrant Mission Bay research hub, Gladstone brings together exceptional researchers, clinicians, and professionals who share a common goal: improving human health through science.

With approximately 600 employees, we offer the agility of an independent institute combined with the impact of a globally recognized research organization. We foster a collaborative, inclusive culture where employees are encouraged to grow professionally while contributing to work that truly matters.

About the Role:

The laboratory of Benoit Bruneau at the Gladstone Institutes (http://bruneaulab.gladstone.org) is searching for a Research Associate (RA) to help us study the regulation of genes during heart development, using mouse models in vivo and stem cells in vitro. We are looking for candidates who are strongly motivated, work well in a team, and who could start July-August 2024. There is a potential for one or two publications within a two-year time period. Candidates with plans for graduate school, medical school or dental school are encouraged to apply.

What You Will Do:

We are looking for a research associate whose primary role will focus on culturing induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) and performing molecular biology techniques to understand gene expression regulation during in vitro cardiac differentiation.

  • iPSC culture: maintain and expand iPSC lines, including routine passaging, freezing, and thawing of cells
  • Differentiation protocols: use differentiation protocols to generate cardiomyocytes, ensuring consistency and reproducibility, and checking differentiation efficiency by flow cytometry
  • Molecular biology techniques: perform molecular biology techniques such as PCR, RT-qPCR, and western blotting to analyze gene expression and protein levels
  • Use sequencing techniques such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and ATAC-seq to investigate gene regulation and epigenetic changes in iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes
  • Analyze experimental and sequencing data, and interpret results
  • Updates records and log books and assists in maintaining lab records and inventory
  • Assist in lab management functions including ordering reagents, organizing laboratory inventory

What You Will Need:

  • Associate's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to multitask
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team setting.

What Is Preferred:

  • BA/BS in Biological sciences and at least 6 months practical experience in a research laboratory (preferred)
  • iPSC or cell culture
  • Flow cytometry
  • Molecular biology skills such as PCR, western blotting, RT-qPCR
  • Lab management (ordering, restocking, database maintenance)
  • Additional Skills
  • R or python programming (or equivalent)
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing, e.g., RNA-seq, ChIP-seq
  • CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, ImageJ Fiji, Photoshop and Illustrator

Salary Range:

$28.91/hr. ($60,147) - $33.32/hr. ($69,307)

What We Do

Gladstone's mission is to drive a new era of discovery in disease-oriented science and to mentor tomorrow’s leaders in an inspiring and diverse environment. Although Gladstone shares traits with other top life science organizations, we pride ourselves on taking uncommon scientific paths to overcoming disease. Our investigators are selected to become authorities in leading or creating new fields, and we work to provide them with resources to explore bold new thoughts, form effective scientific teams, and create or master emerging research technologies that accelerate progress—Gladstone’s special recipe for success that has yielded some of the most important biomedical advances of our time. Our three disease-focused institutes constitute the core of our discovery engine, but do not operate in isolation. We are seizing unprecedented opportunities for “convergence”—defined as the blending of intellectual and physical assets from multiple scientific disciplines and fields to speed the discovery process in our attack on unsolved health problems that affect almost every human family.
