The Role
The first Product Designer will own the end-to-end product experience for an AI-powered field data collection platform. Responsibilities include researching inspectors’ workflows, designing mobile experiences for challenging offline industrial environments, creating AI-assisted reporting and data-query interfaces, prototyping in code, maintaining a design system, and collaborating closely with engineers and product leaders. The role includes on-site testing with inspectors and ownership of designs through launch.
Summary Generated by Built In

Scope automates the data collection that's slowing down the physical world.

Standards are vital for the safety of our infrastructure. Spending hours manually documenting them is not.

Dave is an inspector. Today he's climbing through one of Europe's biggest chemical plants, looking for the corrosion that could shut the whole site down, with a notebook and pen in hand. Tomorrow, he'll spend even longer on the part of the job he hates: turning those scribbles into a report.

We're building the best AI-native data collection layer for the 2 billion field workers like Dave. Scope radically simplifies how inspectors collect data in the field, make decisions, and produce reports. Along the way, we're building the world's largest dataset on the condition of the built world and the decisions experts make about it.

It's a $2T market and we're just getting started, with ambitions. We work with 6 of the top 10 companies in the space. Our customers inspect facilities and products for companies including AstraZeneca and SpaceX.

We've assembled a best-in-class team: acquired and future founders, people from institutions like Imperial, Carnegie Mellon and Oxford, and from firms like Goldman Sachs, Flexport and Amazon.

Since launching from Entrepreneurs First in 2024, we've raised an oversubscribed $20m round led by Index Ventures, the firm behind Figma, Revolut and Wiz, with 100+ unicorns backed to date.

About the role

We're hiring our first Product Designer.

Every engineer at Scope is a product engineer: they talk to users, decide what to build and ship it themselves. You'll work the same way, with design as your edge, and help the engineers around you to build a better product. That covers the whole experience, not just the surface: which problem we solve, how the flow works, what happens when things go wrong, and how it all looks. You'll work closely with the engineers, with Ish our Product Manager, and with Jakob the CTO.

We work in person five days a week from our office in Farringdon.

What you'll work on

Some examples of surfaces in our product that will need your help:

  • Our mobile app gets used inside tanks and on top of pressure vessels. People wear thick gloves, there's usually no signal, and one hand is often holding on to something. Most of what makes a normal app pleasant doesn't apply there, so a big part of the job is figuring out what does.

  • Then there's the report. How AI and the inspector will work together to produce 40 page reports and review them is something nobody has designed well yet.

  • Inspectors but also decision makers should be able to ask things like "Which tanks were over the corrosion limit last year?". Sometimes the right interface will be a chat but often it isn't.

What you'll do
  • Go on site with inspectors and test your designs there, gloves and all.

  • Own the design of every launch, down to the empty states.

  • Prototype fast, in code when it helps.

  • Work next to engineers while they build, so the details come out right.

  • Decide with Ish and Jakob which problems are worth solving.

  • Build the design system that lets engineers ship great work without waiting on you.

Who you are
  • Minimum 3 years designing products that were shipped.

  • A portfolio that shows the messy middle, not just the final screens.

  • You sweat the mobile details: touch targets, offline, errors.

  • You have opinions on where AI helps and where it gets in the way.

  • You'd happily put on a hard hat to understand a problem.

  • Bonus if you've designed for industrial or field work, or prototype in code.

Interview process
  • Intro call.

  • Portfolio deep dive with Ish and an engineer: one project, including what went wrong.

  • Interview with a cofounder: Jonny (CEO) or Jakob (CTO and CPO).

  • Onsite: a real Scope design problem, worked on with the team, then a short presentation.

  • Offer!

What we offer
  • £70k to £100k base + significant equity, so you have a stake in what you are building

  • Full visa sponsorship, giving us access to global talent and an international, diverse team

  • Tools to do your job, including a brand new MacBook and Scope merch

  • Generous above-market annual leave allowance

  • Bupa private medical (0 excess, pre-existing conditions covered) + Bupa dental

  • Employee pension through NEST

  • Flexible parental leave (including adoption leave)

  • Healthy meal-prep lunch and dinners, a fully stocked fridge, and team lunches on Fridays

  • Regular events including off-sites

We value diverse perspectives. If you don't match every point above but this is the kind of problem you want to work on, we strongly encourage you to apply.

Skills Required

  • At least 3 years designing shipped products
  • Portfolio demonstrating the design process, including challenges and iterations
  • Strong understanding of mobile design details, including touch targets, offline use, and error states
  • Ability to work in person five days per week from the Farringdon office
  • Willingness to visit industrial sites and work with inspectors in the field
  • Experience designing for industrial or field work
  • Ability to prototype in code

What We Do

Scope builds AI-native inspection software for TIC and heavy-asset operators. Its platform helps field inspectors configure workflows, access historical context, capture findings by voice, video, or forms, and automatically generate finalized reports. By replacing manual data entry and report writing, Scope aims to make physical data more accessible, accelerate inspections, increase inspector capacity, and improve decisions across aerospace, chemical, energy, and infrastructure environments.
