Job Description
Role Overview
We are seeking a senior, hands-on technical leader to play a foundational role in shaping the next generation of data
visualization tools for Citadel Securities' client-facing products.
This role sits at the intersection of software engineering, data visualization, product design, and human-computer
interaction. The ideal candidate will take ownership of building sophisticated client-facing applications and the reusable frameworks that support them. This person must possess strong engineering skills and exceptional visual judgment, with a deep understanding of how design choices can materially elevate the way complex financial information is understood.
The Principal Engineer will partner closely with product and engineering teams to balance usability, performance, and
maintainability. The initial focus will be on delivering a small number of distinctive, high-quality client applications, with a mandate to extend this work into a scalable, firm-wide standard. This is a high-ownership opportunity for a builder who combines technical rigor with practical execution to turn complex data into clear, durable systems.
Opportunities may be available from time to time in any location in which the business is based for suitable candidates. If you are interested in a career with Citadel, please share your details and we will contact you if there is a vacancy available.
Responsibilities
  • Design and build the core visualization platform for client-facing analytics and experiences across the firm.
  • Develop reusable visualization frameworks, design systems, and tooling that enable teams to rapidly develop high-quality data products.
  • Partner closely with Sales, Business Leaders, Engineering, Product Management, and Design to translate complex business problems into clear technical solutions.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies to continually improve the visualization platform.
  • Drive innovation in how market, trading, and client data are explored, understood, and communicated.
  • Provide technical leadership through hands-on development, design reviews, and mentoring.

Qualifications
  • Strong technical execution and visual judgment.
  • Significant experience contributing to sophisticated data visualization applications, platforms, frameworks, and / or developer tooling.
  • Expertise in modern visualization technologies (e.g., D3.js, Observable, WebGL, Three.js, Vega, React, TypeScript, Python).
  • Strong visual design instincts and a demonstrated understanding of typography, layout, color, visual hierarchy, interaction design, and information architecture.
  • Deep understanding of how users consume and interpret complex information.
  • Experience working across engineering, design, and product organizations.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Engineering, or related discipline.

In accordance with applicable law, the base salary range for this role is $175,000 to $350,000.
In addition, the employee who fills this role will be eligible to participate in a discretionary incentive compensation program, as well as a wide array of benefit programs, such as medical and life insurance, retirement and tax-free savings plans, and access to other healthcare programs.
