Summary Generated by Built In
Public Citizen is a national, non-partisan, public interest group with more than 1,000,000 members and supporters. We hold the government and corporations accountable with campaigns and advocacy before Congress, administrative agencies, and the courts, on issues including money in politics, open government, financial regulation, energy and the climate crisis, fair trade, consumer protection, access to justice, tax policy, workplace safety, drug and medical device safety, healthcare, and more. We are the reason why there are airbags in cars and much more.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Public Citizen’s Climate Program and Public Citizen’s Texas office are looking for a smart, creative, resourceful, diligent, and dogged organizer to support our efforts to block anticipated legislation that would take away the legal tools Texas communities use to hold corporations accountable for harmful misconduct.
Corporations are coming for every tool that Texans have ever used to protect the places and people we love from corporate greed and abuse. We can’t give up these rights without a fight. That’s why Public Citizen is organizing a new campaign to stop state legislation that would put corporations above the law. And we need your help. We are seeking an organizer to help us build a coalition of unusual suspects who can overcome the interests behind this corporate immunity push, with a focus on developing and executing organizing and communications efforts that advance this campaign and identifying and cultivating local spokespeople to deliver our message that no corporation should be above the law.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizing and advocacy: Identify opportunities where direct action organizing, grassroots advocacy, and traditional as well as out-of-the-box earned media tactics can make a difference. Work to build a coalition effort in support of our anti-immunity campaign, including traditional and nontraditional (i.e., conservative-leaning) allies. Identify and develop the leadership of local spokespersons.
  • Media and public education: Develop and maintain media relationships and respond to press inquiries. Help develop media strategies. Write editorial board memoranda, press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, and blog posts. Represent Public Citizen in public forums.
  • Lobby the legislature: identify and track priority legislation, lobby key lawmakers and staff, educate allies about legislation and opportunities, drive public communications to legislative staff about priorities, organize trips to Austin to provide in-person testimony at committee hearings.
  • Making things happen: Above all, make a difference. Develop the materials, recruit the partners, hold the meetings, work with the coalitions, organize the events – do what’s needed to win.
  • Some travel required, other duties as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS

  • 2-5 years of relevant experience in organizing and advocacy.
  • Strong strategic thinking and oral and written communication abilities.
  • Outstanding people skills – you know how to build relationships and get volunteers and partners not just in the door but invested in this work for the long term.
  • High energy, enthusiasm, persistence, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently, balance multiple priorities, and react to new developments under pressure. Creative and collaborative spirit.
  • Knowledge or experience on climate and energy policy in Texas, organizing in Texas, and lobbying the Texas legislature is a plus, though eagerness and ability to learn quickly work too.
  • Strong commitment to the cause and understanding of its urgency.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:  Competitive salary between $72,919 to 105,513 plus a generous benefit package. Below is a list of some of our benefits (please note that some benefits have eligibility requirements).  This is a one-year grant-contingent position, with the possibility of renewal.
