NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR

Job opportunity is contingent upon award of the contract to GHG

Job Purpose

The Network Administrator position is responsible for installation, maintenance, upgrades, customization and administration of the servers comprising the Local Area Network (LAN) environment in support of NASA's Near Space Network program. Knowledgeable in a variety of systems, including routers, switches, servers, computers and printers. Provides leadership and technical mentoring to more junior group members as needed.

NASA's Near Space Network fulfills the essential needs of user missions, empowering them with mission-critical communications and navigation services and enabling the transmission of science and exploration data to and from space. As a single point of service for missions in the near-space region - out to two million kilometers away - the network connects users with either government or commercial service providers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed procedures and documentation for performing routine computer system maintenance.
  • Develop life-cycle replacement criteria and detailed replacement plans for critical infrastructure servers.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting and recovery of LAN outages/interruptions.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled network maintenance for the multi-server/multi-platform network.
  • Provide network administration on UNIX, DOS/Windows, and Macintosh platforms.
  • Responsible for administration and support of all networking protocols.
  • Implement and support local and wide-area network communications, electronic mail (E-mail} services, and systems and network security.
  • Maintain network operating systems and hardware to the most current approved levels.
  • Test new operating system releases for compatibility with existing business applications.
  • Apply patches and update to networked application software.
  • Assist the Computer Technicians, E-mail Administrator, Network Engineer, and LAN/WAN personnel in the performance of their duties as required.
  • Administer and update anti-virus software.
  • Responsible for the backup of data, including monitoring end-user backups, automatic backup routines, and installing and maintaining backup software.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required.
  • B.S. degree in Computer Science or multiple years career experience in network administration. Minimum three years of experience in the operation, installation, support and administration of multi-platform LANS is required.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or higher Cisco certification preferred.
  • Experience with Windows-based systems, systems analysis and support, and knowledge of communications and E-mail protocols is necessary.
  • MCSE is preferred.
  • UNIX systems administration, IRIX experience, Macintosh knowledge, support background in an academic or research computing environment, satellite, terrestrial and data communications experience desired.
  • Extensive hardware maintenance and router experience preferred.

Working environment

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines." And move the largely sedentary role to the physical requirements section.
  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, limited physical activity is required.

Physical Requirements

  • The ability to carry a laptop and the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 10 pounds.
