Join the team bringing advanced autonomy to the built world

At Bedrock, we're moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team includes veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we're deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction equipment across the country, improving safety on job sites and accelerating schedules on critical infrastructure projects.
We're not here debating the future of AI. We're deploying it in the real world. In just two years, we've raised $350M and achieved the first fully autonomous excavator deployments in construction.
This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You'll work alongside construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can't touch. If you're ready to do meaningful work on hard problems, we'd love to have you join us.

About the Role & Team

Bedrock is bringing autonomy to the construction industry! We're a group of veterans from the autonomous vehicle industry who are passionate about bringing the benefits of automation to areas in the construction industry currently underserved by the market. We're growing our sizable fleet of retrofitted autonomous construction machines and we're looking for a motivated hardware engineering intern to support system testing and integration. You will work alongside senior engineers who design these systems, and you will help deliver robust and capable autonomous HW systems to the field.

What You'll Do
  • Support the design, characterization, integration, and validation of Bedrock autonomy hardware and related systems, under the guidance of senior engineers.

  • Assist with component evaluations for our autonomous HW platforms

  • Write sensor data analysis and test automation scripts (Python and/or C++/C/Rust)

  • Run tests, collect data, and document results clearly for the engineering team

What We're Looking ForRequired
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field at the University of Waterloo

  • Solid foundational knowledge in HW engineering subjects such as mechanical, electrical, and embedded SW

  • Coursework or project experience with some or all of the following:

    • Embedded compute platforms, including single-board computers or edge compute modules

    • Common autonomous sensing technologies such as lidar, camera, radar, GNSS, or IMUs

    • Packaging and integration of HW systems, including basic mechanical or thermal considerations

    • Basic signaling and communication protocols such as CAN, UART, SPI, or Ethernet

  • Proficiency in one or more of Python, C/C++, or Rust, with the ability to write scripts for tests, data collection, or analysis

  • Strong fundamentals in circuits, signals, and basic mechanical design

  • Comfortable working in a lab environment with tools such as a multimeter, oscilloscope, function generator, soldering iron, or hammer when necessary :)

Preferred
  • Prior co-op terms, personal projects, or club experience (e.g. UW Robotics, Formula Electric, WATonomous) in hardware or embedded systems

  • Expertise with camera, lidar, radar, IMU, or GNSS

  • Embedded compute platforms, in particular the Nvidia Jetson lineup

  • Communication protocols (CAN, UART, SPI, RS232/422/485, Ethernet, etc.)

  • Curiosity about autonomy and prior work in this area

  • Basic PCB design or schematic capture tools (KiCad, Eagle, Altium, Cadence, etc.)

  • Experience with version control (git) and collaborative engineering workflows

  • Familiarity with construction, off-road, or heavy equipment

  • A portfolio of personal or academic hardware projects (robotics, embedded systems, etc.)
