The Role
Build and ship physician-facing product features across a mobile-first React frontend and Python backend. Extend APIs, evolve schemas, and deliver tested production work while collaborating on architecture and engineering standards on a small team.
Summary Generated by Built In

Physicians make some of the most consequential career decisions of their lives with very little trusted information. They choose jobs based on job posts, recruiter calls, incomplete compensation data, vague promises about culture, and a process that often serves everyone except the physician.

Tessellate is building something different: a physician-first career platform that helps doctors understand where they actually fit — clinically, professionally, geographically, financially, and personally.

We believe the future of physician hiring won't be won by another job board, staffing agency, or resume database. It will be won by the company that earns physician trust, turns fragmented healthcare data into useful intelligence, and helps healthcare organizations build roles worthy of physician commitment — and we're looking for an engineer to help us build it.

About Tessellate

Physicians first, always. Tessellate is an early-stage healthcare technology company building the intelligence layer for physician career alignment. We combine healthcare claims data, provider and facility data, physician preferences, geographic context, and AI-assisted enrichment to help physicians evaluate career opportunities with more clarity and less noise — privately, with their trust and their privacy protected at every step.

For employers, Tessellate offers a fundamentally better way to understand fit, improve conversion, and engage aligned physicians — without relying on placement fees or transactional recruiting incentives. We were built around a simple belief: physicians shouldn't have to make career-defining decisions with less information than people use to buy a house.

We're early, but this isn't a whiteboard idea. We have a working product, real users, a live matching engine, a healthcare data pipeline, and early commercial demand.

The role

We're hiring an associate to mid-level product engineer to build alongside our small team and ship features across the product — from a mobile-first frontend through the Python API and the data beneath it. This is a build-and-ship role: your week is spent turning product ideas into working, tested, shipped features that physicians use.

You won't be alone at the edges. We have fractional senior support for our infrastructure and a dedicated data engineer for the claims layer, so you can lean on real depth where you need it and stay focused on moving the product forward. What we need from you is momentum on the product itself.

What you'll do

  • Build and polish the physician app, owning real user-facing surfaces mobile-first.
  • Extend our backend API and the data beneath it: new endpoints, safe schema changes, and data work you can reason about directly.
  • Turn product ideas into features that are shipped, tested, and working in production — with support available on the infrastructure underneath.
  • Work directly with the team lead on architecture and trade-offs, and help shape engineering standards as we grow.

What we're looking for

  • An associate or mid-level engineer on the rise. You have a few years of production experience, you're growing fast, and you're ready to own real features on a small team with a lead close by — not a senior who needs a specialist beside them, and not a first job out of school.
  • Real frontend craft. React/TypeScript, mobile-first, framework depth (Next.js ideal) — not a backend engineer who merely tolerates the frontend.
  • B2C product experience (strongly preferred). Consumer-facing software experience is a big plus — you understand what it takes to make a product people actually want to use: performance, polish, and UX that earns trust.
  • Genuine backend comfort. Python (FastAPI or transferable) and Postgres you can query, model, and evolve without fear.
  • Design sensibility. You can produce a clean, usable interface and reason about UX, tool-agnostic.
  • A builder's instinct for autonomy. You take a feature from ambiguity to shipped, largely solo, and thrive on a small team.
  • AI-native. You already build with the most advanced AI and cloud tooling and use it to ship quality software at pace.

Nice to have

  • Some DevOps interest or exposure. AWS, Terraform, GitHub Actions, CI/CD. You don't need to own our infrastructure (we have that covered), but comfort deploying your own work and a willingness to get your hands into the pipeline now and then goes a long way on a lean team.
  • Event-driven / real-time systems (queues, streaming, websockets).
  • Experimentation / A-B testing and product analytics (we use PostHog).
  • Experience as an engineer at a startup, or leading a rebuild.
  • Healthcare or other regulated domains.

Why this role

Tessellate is pre-seed and early — this is a real chance to help build a startup from the ground floor, led by second-time founders. There are genuinely hard, interesting data challenges under the hood that push us to lean into AI and machine learning as part of the product itself. We expect our engineers to be AI-native: using the most advanced AI and cloud tooling to ship quality software at pace. Startups aren't for everyone — but you'll learn a great deal, own outcomes that matter, and share in the upside if we win.

Details

  • Location & schedule. Nashville, TN. Hybrid, 1–2 days/week in person at our coworking space in the Wedgwood-Houston (WeHo) neighborhood.
  • Experience. Typically 2–5 years building production software. B2C (consumer-facing) software experience strongly preferred.
  • Work authorization. You must be legally authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship, now or in the future. This role is not open to candidates who require sponsorship.
  • Compensation. $100,000–$130,000 base, plus meaningful early-stage equity.
  • Reports to. Head of Product Engineering.

  • Design sensibility and ability to reason about UX
  • Ability to take ambiguous features from concept to shipped product independently
  • Experience building with advanced AI and cloud tooling (AI-native)
  • Authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship
  • Willingness to work hybrid in Nashville 1–2 days per week
  • B2C / consumer-facing product experience
  • DevOps exposure: AWS, Terraform, GitHub Actions, CI/CD
  • Experience with event-driven systems, queues, streaming, or websockets
  • Experimentation and product analytics experience (PostHog)
