About this role
Your teamTechnology & Development Operations sits within Platform Ecosystem & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineering, part of BlackRock’s Platform Enablement organization. We build production software and reusable engineering patterns that modernize workflows across Business Operations and Client Services. The team partners closely with Aladdin Engineering and other technology teams to deliver full-stack AI applications, intelligent document processing, retrieval-augmented generation, workflow automation, and data-driven operational tools. We focus on turning validated ideas into secure, reliable, and reusable production capabilities rather than isolated demonstrations.
Your role and impact
As a Full-Stack AI Engineer, you will turn complex operational problems into well-designed software across the user-interface, backend, data, and AI layers. Your work may include React and TypeScript experiences, Python application programming interfaces (APIs), orchestration services, document-processing pipelines, semantic and vector retrieval, large language model (LLM) workflows, and the production controls needed to operate these systems responsibly. You do not need to be a machine-learning researcher. We are looking for a strong software engineer who knows how to make AI capabilities useful, testable, secure, and reliable for real users.
Your responsibilities
In every role at BlackRock, you'll be expected to apply sound judgement and critical thinking to solve complex problems, adapt as the business evolves, and combine the curiosity to explore new approaches and technologies with the rigor to challenge the results. The scope of this role also includes the following responsibilities:
- Design, build, test, and deploy full-stack applications using Python and modern JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks, supported by automated testing and AI evaluations covering correctness, grounding, reliability, and failure cases.
- Develop backend APIs, orchestration services, and application data models for interactive and long-running workflows using relational and non-relational databases.
- Build user-facing review and approval experiences that integrate governed language-model, document-intelligence, embedding, semantic-search, vector-search, and source-grounded generation capabilities.
- Apply secure software-delivery practices, including continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), logging, monitoring, troubleshooting, and disciplined validation of AI-assisted code.
- Partner with domain experts, Aladdin Engineering, and other technology teams to understand workflows, identify appropriate automation, and integrate applications with shared platforms and services.
- Create reusable components, engineering patterns, and documentation that make future applications faster, safer, and easier to maintain.
Your experience
- Four or more years of professional software-engineering experience building and shipping applications, supported by a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong Python programming skills and experience developing backend services, designing APIs, testing software, using Git and code review, supporting continuous delivery, and deploying applications in cloud or managed-platform environments.
- Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript and a modern frontend framework such as React or Angular, along with working knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL), data modeling, and application databases.
- Hands-on experience building LLM capabilities such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), structured extraction, tool use, prompt workflows, or AI evaluation, with sound judgment when using AI-assisted development tools and familiarity with responsible-AI controls and observability.
- Ability to break down ambiguous problems, evaluate technical options, and communicate recommendations clearly in professional English and Spanish.
- Preferred experience with Azure-based storage, database, document-intelligence, and search services, including unstructured-document processing, hybrid retrieval, embeddings, vector databases, reranking, and retrieval evaluation.
- Preferred familiarity with asynchronous or batch-processing pipelines, Open Container Initiative (OCI) container image packaging and runtime, enterprise-grade container orchestration platforms supporting declarative infrastructure and horizontal scaling, Infrastructure as Code, traditional natural-language processing, custom model deployment or fine-tuning, and regulated financial or operational workflows.
Our benefits
To help you stay energized, engaged and inspired, we offer a wide range of benefits including a strong retirement plan, tuition reimbursement, comprehensive healthcare, support for working parents and Flexible Time Off (FTO) so you can relax, recharge and be there for the people you care about.
