Funkit designs short-term rentals across the US.
Funkit designs short-term rentals across the US. Guests scroll past a good interior and stop at a great backyard - this is the role that builds the backyard. It's the most exploratory role on our team: you set the concept rather than execute someone else's, and the idea has to hold up spatially, functionally and financially, not just look good in a render.
Responsibilities:
- Design pools, hot tubs, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, pickleball courts, murals, landscaping, games and lounge areas - and the concept that makes them add up to one place rather than a list of features
- Outdoor layouts and amenity plans for full properties
- Landscaping concepts: planting, hardscape, shade, and how the site reads from the driveway to the back fence
- Select furniture and materials that survive weather and heavy guest turnover
- SketchUp modelling including terrain, topography and existing architecture
- Place murals in coordination with the graphic team
Requirements:
- Strong SketchUp is not negotiable, including terrain and site modelling
- A background in architecture, landscape design, interior design, hospitality design or experiential design - the design eye and spatial thinking matter more than your exact job title
- Creative thinking: we want unexpected moments, not a standard patio set and a fire bowl
- Practical judgement about scale, materials, drainage and how people actually move through an outdoor space
- Fluent English
- Applications need a resume, a portfolio with SketchUp work clearly visible, and a 1-2 minute video intro
Nice to have: Spanish; Hospitality, resort or short-term rental experience.
Benefits:
- $1,000-3,000 USD/month, set at the interview
- Fully remote, open globally
- The most exploratory, least conventional design role on the team
