HOW YOU’LL ADVANCE OUR MISSION | POSITION OVERVIEW
Foundation for the Carolinas seeks a strategic, relationship-oriented, and technically strong Director of Investments to lead investment oversight and strategy, donor investment consultation, external investment partner management, and impact investing across the Foundation's $5 billion investment platform. This leadership role serves as a trusted partner to donors, professional advisors, senior leadership, and the Investment Committee while ensuring the Foundation's investment offerings remain well-governed, transparent, efficient, and aligned with philanthropic objectives.
The Director of Investments will be responsible for delivering an exceptional donor experience through transparency, education, and investment stewardship. Working closely with the Philanthropy team, this leader will help donors understand investment performance, risk, governance, and available investment options while ensuring the Foundation's platform is the right fit for their charitable goals and preferences. In addition, this leader will ensure platform and process efficiency.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative and mission-driven investment leader who brings strong institutional investment expertise, exceptional judgment, and a fiduciary mindset. They are equally comfortable discussing investment strategy with sophisticated committee members, building confidence with donors, and leading initiatives that align financial stewardship with meaningful community impact
YOUR UNIQUE IMPACT | ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Donor Engagement
- Serve as FFTC's senior investment representative for donors, prospects, family offices, nonprofit clients, and professional advisors.
- Build trusted relationships that support donor acquisition, retention, and stewardship.
- Clearly communicate investment philosophy, performance, risk, fees, liquidity, governance, and investment processes.
- Develop donor-facing reports, presentations, educational programs, and market updates that promote transparency and confidence.
Investment Strategy & Governance
- Provide leadership for investment pools, advisor-managed assets, custom portfolios, and impact investing initiatives.
- Help shape and ensure compliance with investment policies, fiduciary standards, governance practices, and risk management frameworks.
- Partner with senior leadership and the Investment Committee on portfolio construction, asset allocation, liquidity strategy, and platform design.
- Oversee reporting standards, performance monitoring, and policy reviews.
- Ensure investment management processes are efficient and effective.
OCIO & Investment Partner Management
- Serve as the day-to-day relationship manager for the Foundation's OCIO (Outsourced Chief Investment Officer) and other investment service providers.
- Evaluate investment performance, reporting quality, risk management, and service delivery.
- Conduct due diligence, benchmarking, and partner assessments, including RFP processes as needed.
- Ensure external partners support a high-quality, donor-centered investment experience.
Investment Committee Leadership
- Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Governing Board’s Investment Committee.
- Prepare and present investment reports, dashboards, recommendations, and market updates.
- Translate complex investment topics into clear, actionable insights for committee members and leadership.
Impact Investing
- Contribute to FFTC's impact investing strategy and mission-related investment initiatives.
- Evaluate opportunities that align financial stewardship with community impact.
- Help establish governance, measurement, and reporting frameworks for impact investments.
Team Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop investment team
- Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, responsiveness, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR SUCCESS | QUALIFICATION
Required
- 7+ years of investment experience in institutional asset management, foundations, endowments, OCIO environments, investment consulting, private wealth, or related fields.- CFA
- Expertise in asset allocation, portfolio construction, governance, performance measurement, and risk management.
- Demonstrated success presenting to donors, boards, investment committees, and senior executives.
- Strong communication, relationship management, and leadership skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Accounting, Mathematics, Public Policy, or a related field preferred.
Preferred
- CAIA
- Experience with donor-advised funds, foundations, nonprofit organizations, or mission-driven institutions.
- Experience managing external investment partners and service providers.
- Impact investing experience
