Who We’re Looking for:


Therabody is looking for a hands-on Director of Engineering to directly assist the VP of Product Development & Manufacturing in the mechanical and electrical ideation and design of our entire roadmap. We are looking for someone that can turn ideas and scientific requests into manufacturable products. This position will lead a team of engineers in China and will potentially have 1-2 direct reports in the US as well. Los Angeles based with approximately 25% of the time spent traveling to China.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the design of mechanical, electrical and software for all our products
  • Work closely with the product owner and science teams to ensure the designs are executed according to the specifications while considering cost, quality control, and manufacturing complexity
  • Manage the internal mechanical and electrical engineering and software teams as well as the external teams at our contract manufacturers
  • Bring science requirements to live through thoughtful design that speaks the language of the company: premium, high-quality, intuitive, effective
  • Manage anywhere from 6-10 ongoing projects at a time, all on different timelines, with multiple prerequisites, unique to each project
  • Ensure the value proposition of the product is maintained throughout the development process while coordinating quality, cost, and manufacturing
  • Lead the mechanical team and electrical team who are responsible for the execution of the design of the products. Provide leadership to maximize efficacy and ensure proper design transfers to the contract manufacturers
  • Own our technology roadmap and work with our key partners and internal team to execute timely. This includes motors, batteries, pcb, pumps, valves, TEC, heating elements, materials (plastic materials, SS, Al)
  • Lead, mentor and develop the engineering and product development team with hands-on guidance on solving engineering and manufacturing challenges
  • Seek new technologies that can be implemented in our products
  • Create and manage to efficient product development timelines and budgets
  • Always think about what’s coming next and put together an actionable plan to ensure the company is always at the fore front of the tech-wellness industry

The Right Person Would Have:

  • A hunger and passion for creating new, innovative products that are differentiated and superior to existing products in the market
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in engineering (Mechanical, Industrial preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience in Engineering, R&D roles related to consumer electronics, fitness or medical
  • Deep experience in mechanical engineering, specifically around moving parts like drive-trains, motors where noise is an important factor
  • Experience leading or working closely with quality teams
  • Deep knowledge driving or managing 3D design with solid works or similar
  • Deep knowledge in the product development process from prototyping to mass production
  • Passion driven individual that finds joy in using engineering and technology to help people live a healthier better life
  • Flexible working hours. Interaction with our China team will happen daily and we need the candidate to be ok adjusting to the time difference (8am in China is 4-5pm in LA)
  • Experience working with sourcing and supply chain teams to control pricing
  • Proven success developing consumer electronic or medical products
  • Sales mindset that justifies and validates features in market opportunities and specific audiences needs. We need a candidate that sees engineering and technology as a tool to deliver value to the customer is the shape of a product. A technical engineer with no understanding of the customer and value of the product would not be a good fit for us
  • Problem-solving mentality. Developing products is all about trying and failing and we are looking for someone who isn’t afraid of issues and jumps on them immediately to solve them
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams including R&D, Engineering, quality, project management.
  • Very familiar with the typical hardware development structure process (Concept, prototyping, EV, DV, PP, MP)
  • Exposure to the medical world or human sciences in general is ideal
