Job DescriptionThe Costume Designer will help to define the overall “look” of the production within strict budgets and tight schedules. Primary duties and responsibilities will be to:
• Deliver initial ideas to Directors about the overall costume vision, character plots and original costume designs, using sketches and fabric samples
• Collaborate with the Director of Photography and Production Designer to finalise colour palettes and with hair and make-up team to create a cohesive look
• Ensure the costumes fit in with their overall vision and work with the chosen lighting and camera angles
• Research the costume styles, designs and construction methods suitable for the time period
• Select and hire appropriate suppliers and Costume Makers and supervise fabric research and purchase to ensure that garments are completed to deadlines.
• Arrange fittings for Actors and extras and oversee any alterations or special features
• Break down scripts scene by scene to work out how many characters are involved and what costumes are required
• Ensure that accurate financial records are kept and weekly expenditure reports are produced
• Coordinate the return of hired outfits and the sale or disposal of any remaining costumes.
QualificationsQualifications and competencies include:
• Bachelor degree in in Costume Design, Fashion, Theatre Design or Performing Arts (Production) or related discipline, or at least 6 years’ related experience
• At least 2 years’ production experience
• Knowledge of story structure and character arcs
• Exceptional design skills
• Knowledge of costume history and modern fashion
• Strong garment production skills and knowledge of textiles
• Wide-ranging cultural knowledge base
• Strong research skills
• Ability to work under pressure to strict deadlines
• Highly organised nature
• Ability to put others at ease (when working closely with Actors in a physical sense)
