POSITION SUMMARY
A boutique commercial real estate investment and development firm is seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to oversee accounting and financial reporting for its investment properties and corporate entities.
The Controller will be responsible for financial reporting, property accounting, CAM reconciliations, lease administration, budgeting, audit and tax coordination, cash management, lender reporting, and accounting controls, while working closely with the firm’s principals and existing accounting support.
The ideal candidate has strong commercial real estate accounting experience and is comfortable in a highly hands-on role, performing day-to-day accounting work in addition to overseeing the accounting function. The candidate should also be proactive about improving systems, processes, and financial controls.
This position is eligible for an annual incentive compensation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for investment properties and corporate entities.
- Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities.
- Prepare and post journal entries, perform bank reconciliations and account analyses, and maintain accurate general ledger records.
- Oversee property accounting, including rent revenue, tenant recoveries, security deposits, prepaid expenses, reserve accounts, and other property-level activity.
- Manage lease accounting and administration and ensure lease information is accurately maintained within the accounting system.
- Prepare and oversee CAM analyses, tenant billings, and CAM reconciliations.
- Establish, maintain, and monitor accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Supervise and work closely with existing accounting support, including accounts payable, and help develop and expand staff responsibilities as appropriate.
- Oversee and remain hands-on with accounting systems, including Yardi Voyager 7S and 8.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve technology, automate recurring processes, and increase efficiency, including investor distributions, lease administration, and other accounting functions.
- Prepare and monitor budgets, financial analysis, variance reporting, and special financial reports.
- Coordinate with outside tax professionals and ensure they receive complete and timely financial information.
- Coordinate external audits and other third-party financial reporting requirements.
- Manage banking relationships, cash management, investor distributions, and treasury functions.
- Oversee lender reporting and ensure timely compliance with loan reporting requirements.
- Monitor loan covenants and financial performance, provide early visibility into potential compliance concerns, and communicate directly with lenders and bankers as needed.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting, financial reporting, and regulatory requirements.
- Handle special projects and additional accounting and financial responsibilities as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of property accounting experience, preferably involving a commercial or retail real estate portfolio.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, lease accounting, CAM reconciliations, and commercial real estate financial reporting.
- Strong hands-on experience with Yardi Voyager 7S and/or 8.
- Demonstrated experience preparing financial statements, journal entries, bank reconciliations, and property-level accounting.
- Experience with lender reporting and loan compliance requirements preferred.
- Strong Excel skills.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple properties, entities, and deadlines simultaneously.
- Comfortable working independently, supervising accounting support, and communicating directly with principals, lenders, and outside professionals.
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable identifying problems, improving processes, and taking ownership of accounting and financial matters.
Skills Required
