The Role
Design, build, and ship AI-native features and production LLM agents for healthcare workflows. Improve core AI stack (prompt orchestration, retrieval, evaluations), implement safety/guardrails, and deliver full‑stack solutions touching backend infrastructure and member-facing experiences.
Summary Generated by Built In

Most of what makes American healthcare expensive isn’t medical care. It’s the machinery wrapped around it: middlemen taking a cut, fraud nobody stops, and billing systems designed to fight over payment instead of deliver care. The result is higher premiums, denied claims, surprise bills, and a system patients increasingly experience as adversarial.

Arlo is rebuilding health insurance for small businesses from first principles: making sure as much of every premium dollar as possible goes to care instead of getting absorbed by the system around it. We do that by identifying fraud earlier, steering members toward higher-quality and lower-cost care, automating operational overhead, and eliminating vendors whose business exists mostly to take a cut.

AI is the foundation that makes this work. We use it across underwriting, operations, clinical programs, and member experience to build an insurer that becomes more efficient as the technology improves.

We’re already operating at meaningful scale: profitable, hundreds of millions in premiums, tens of thousands of members covered, and growing quickly through brokers, employers, and partners. Backed by Upfront Ventures, 8VC, and General Catalyst, with a team from Palantir, YC companies, and longtime healthcare operators.

About the Role

As an Applied AI Engineer, you will own the end-to-end development of core product experiences that redefine how our members interact with their healthcare.

  • Architect and ship new AI-native features that serve tens of thousands of members.

  • Build and deploy sophisticated LLM-powered agents that autonomously reason through complex healthcare workflows.

  • Evolve our core AI stack by advancing our capabilities in prompt orchestration, context engineering, retrieval systems, and evaluations.

What You Will Do

To give you a sense of the impact you'll have, here are some initial projects you could own:

  1. AI-Powered Triage: Develop an intelligent experience that helps patients understand their symptoms and guides them to the right setting of care (ER, Urgent Care, or PCP). You’ll prevent costly, unnecessary visits and directly save members thousands in out-of-pocket costs.

  2. An Infinitely Scalable Care Partner: Build a conversational AI to help patients understand their health, from decoding lab results to clarifying treatment plans. You'll give members the 24/7 support and infinite patience that the traditional system simply cannot offer.

  3. Proactive Health Engine: Pioneer an outreach tool that analyzes claims data to send personalized, timely campaigns for preventive screenings and medication adherence. You’ll transform healthcare from a system of static, soulless emails into one of dynamic, personal engagement.

What We’re Looking For

This role is a great fit if you are a product-minded engineer who thrives on building with the latest AI technology.

  • Demonstrated experience shipping full-stack AI products, from backend infrastructure (Python, Postgres) to production LLM applications.

  • A strong product intuition and deep intellectual curiosity, with a passion for building 0-to-1 experiences in a fast-paced startup environment. You own problems end-to-end.

  • A pragmatic approach to LLM safety and reliability, with hands-on experience implementing guardrails, red-teaming, and creating evaluation frameworks to manage trade-offs between performance, cost, and latency.

  • Fluency with AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g., Cursor, Copilot) to accelerate your development workflow.

Nice to Haves
  • Experience with our front-end stack (TypeScript, React).

  • Familiarity with deploying AI workloads on a major cloud platform (AWS, etc.).

Target Compensation Range

$210,000 – $230,000 + equity

Why Join Arlo:
  • High ownership: You’ll get real responsibility from day one—our high-trust team empowers you to run with big problems and shape core parts of the company.

  • Join an important mission: Your work directly influences how people access care and improves lives at scale.

  • Growth & expansion: We’re moving fast, and as we grow, your scope will grow with us—new challenges, bigger opportunities, and rapid career velocity.

  • Apply AI to a problem that matters: Instead of optimizing ads or cutting labor costs, you’ll use AI to fundamentally reimagine how people get healthcare.

  • High pace, high collaboration: We operate with velocity, first-principles thinking, and a team that works closely, openly, and with ambition.

Exact compensation inclusive of salary and any bonuses is determined based on a number of factors including experience and skill level, location, and qualifications which are assessed during the interview process.
