Unusual Machines, a Florida-based drone component manufacturer, completed its acquisition of Upgrade Energy, a company specializing in drone batteries and power systems. The acquisition was originally announced in May and will add batteries to Unusual Machines’ portfolio, complementing its existing offerings such as motors and headsets.
The company has worked to scale its battery production capacity and staff Upgrade Energy’s 18,500-square-foot facility in Torrance, California ahead of the deal’s closure. Unusual Machines also plans to establish battery pack operations in Orlando, Florida. Matthew Barnard, Upgrade Energy’s CEO, mentioned that combining the two companies’ capabilities will enable the entity to play a larger role in the drone supply chain and deliver improved performance, availability and reliability to drone operators.
“The U.S. is investing heavily in domestic drone production, but the industrial base is only as strong as the supply chain supporting it,” Allan Evans, Unusual Machines’ CEO, said in a statement. “Batteries are an essential part of that equation. Matt and his team have built a strong business with deep expertise in battery technology and manufacturing. This adds a critical piece of the drone powertrain to our business and strengthens our ability to support the industry’s next phase of growth.”
