MetLife’s Global Cybersecurity team plays a vital role in protecting the company’s systems and data worldwide. As cybercriminals grow more sophisticated, the team stays ahead by monitoring networks, responding to incidents, and implementing technical safeguards that protect both customer and employee information.

With MetLife operating across more than 40 markets, the team leverages advanced technologies to reduce the risk of data security incidents and strengthen defenses. Working globally means coordinating across time zones, adapting to local regulations, and sharing best practices to ensure consistent protection company-wide.

The cybersecurity team’s efforts are essential to maintaining MetLife’s reputation for trust, reliability, and resilience. Their expertise ensures that the business can operate securely and respond quickly to emerging threats, while also supporting innovation and growth. To dive further into the experience and impact employees can make on the team, we sat down with MetLife cybersecurity leader, Sean.

Q: Great to chat with you, Sean! Before we get started, can you share a bit more about your role?

Sean: Absolutely. I am the Director of Information Security in EMEA, and part of MetLife’s Global Cybersecurity team. The division that I am in is responsible for safeguarding the company’s digital assets and ensuring resilience across all markets.

Q: Cybersecurity is a big responsibility. What does it mean to have a global role at MetLife, and what do you find most meaningful about the work?

Sean: For me, having a global cybersecurity responsibility at MetLife means being a guardian of trust for millions of customers and employees. It’s not just about defending systems; it’s about protecting what’s good and right. Every day, I’m driven by a passion to safeguard people’s data and privacy, knowing our work underpins the company’s reputation for reliability and resilience.

What makes it especially meaningful is the collaboration with teams across the globe. I get to work with incredibly talented professionals from diverse cultures and backgrounds, all united by a shared mission: protecting the data and assets that allow MetLife to make a real difference in people’s lives. That sense of purpose, combined with global teamwork, is what makes this role so fulfilling.

Q: How has working at MetLife helped you grow your skills and advance in your career in cybersecurity?

Sean: Joining MetLife, I was amazed by how advanced our cyber program is. The company adopts best practices across so many areas, from threat intelligence to incident response. There are targeted programs for emerging cyber trends, which have helped me expand my expertise and stay at the forefront of the industry. The opportunities for professional development and exposure to global challenges have been instrumental in my career growth.

Q: What technologies do you work with, and what’s a challenge you’ve faced in cybersecurity at MetLife?

Sean: We use a range of advanced tools like Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) platforms, endpoint protection, cloud security, and AI-driven analytics. But the real strength isn’t just in the tech... It’s in how our people use it. Our team collaborates across time zones, shares best practices, and constantly innovates. For example, automation helps us detect threats faster, but it’s our analysts who turn those alerts into meaningful action. That human element is what keeps us agile and effective.

From a challenge perspective, I would say the biggest one is managing the pace. Cybersecurity is a field where urgency is the norm, and sometimes we have to shift into high gear to respond quickly. What I’ve learned is the importance of building a resilient team, one that’s not only technically skilled but also committed to growing together.

Seeing our team evolve, support each other, and grow with MetLife has been incredibly rewarding. It’s that combination of smart technology and strong people that keeps us ahead.

By proactively managing risks and fostering a secure environment, we help MetLife explore new opportunities and deliver value to customers worldwide.
