Social technology giant Meta is set to acquire PlayAI, a Palo Alto-based company specializing in generating realistic AI voices. The move, originally reported by Bloomberg, could have PlayAI’s full team join Meta by next week.

Meta, which operates a portfolio of apps including Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, alongside hardware products like the Meta Quest VR gaming headset, has recently invested in furthering its AI strategy. The company invested over $14 billion in a partnership with Scale AI to access high-quality training data for its AI models. Additionally, Meta has also expanded its workforce with AI experts who’ve previously worked at industry competitors.

With the addition of PlayAI’s technology, Meta reportedly plans to incorporate PlayAI’s voice capabilities into its product roadmap, including AI characters, Meta AI, wearables and audio content generation tools. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
