Akamai Technologies, a Boston-area cybersecurity and cloud computing company, has announced its acquisition of Fermyon, a firm specializing in serverless WebAssembly technology.

In a statement released Monday, Akamai said Fermyon’s cloud-native WebAssembly Function-as-a-Service platform will enhance its globally distributed network, enabling developers to build lightweight, high-performance applications at lower cost. The acquisition supports Akamai’s strategy to expand its compute capabilities beyond traditional data centers by integrating Fermyon’s technology to offer a broader range of cloud-native and serverless tools for building next-generation applications.

Akamai also stated that the deal will strengthen the connection between its edge compute services and its existing performance and security product suite, enabling deeper integration across its platform.
