Move over, San Francisco. You too, New York City. A new study out today revealed that Boulder, Colo., is the country’s most popular city for for high tech startups. In fact, the city’s rate of tech startup formation is six times the national average. Not only that, Denver comes in at number six, helping make Colorado the best-represented state on the list.

This is according to a study by Engine. Is, a think tank that connects startups and the government. Engine asserts that tech entrepreneurs are attracted to cities with at least one of three specific qualities: their reputation as a tech hub with a skilled workforce, access to the defense or aerospace industries, or that they are college towns. Boulder, in particular, has proven to be a perfect mix.

"In the case of Boulder, a startup community whose evolution I've observed closely over the past many years, the cultural and economic transformation has been extraordinary,” said Brad Feld, Foundry Group founder and Engine advisory board member, according to the report. “While there isn't one, definitive blueprint to building a technology industry, this research can hopefully inspire communities and policymakers to work together to ensure that the spread of high-tech entrepreneurship isn't just a trend, but a long-term phenomenon.”

While Boulder leads the nation in the number of tech startups per capita, Denver and two other Colorado cities—Fort Collins-Loveland and Colorado Springs—also made the top ten. See the full rankings below.
