Persistence Pays: How One Denver Startup Overcame 126 Rejections To Achieve Funding

When FullContact CEO Bart Lorang and his cofounders set out to solve the world’s contact information problems, they learned some important lessons about communicating along the way.

The Denver-based startup makes a cloud-based address book for individuals, businesses and developers. Just two months after it was founded in 2010, the startup’s initial product received an unexpected thumbs-up from Web magazine LifeHacker.

As five customers per second signed up for the software, the company’s servers crashed, and the team didn’t sleep for three days, said Lorang.

The cofounders realized they needed to build a full-scale version of their product – and obtain funding to make that happen. But initial attempts to win investors hit roadblocks, including a lack of patents. “Different investors were saying that we weren’t a fundable entity,” Lorang said.
