It is extremely important to be on the cutting edge of your industry at every moment of your career. Of course, this is easier said then down. With the advancements in technology over the last 2 years, forgetting the previous two decades, we always have a lot of work to do.
So how do you overcome the monster that is knowledge? Focus. Focus on what innovates your business in your industry. One of the greatest ways to focus your product or service is to get out and see what others are doing. I know competition is fierce, but if you go out on the road for an “innovation tour” you may just find the idea that will push your business over its next hurdle. Or if you are lucky, over the next mountain.
Trade shows, conferences, and company think-tanks are always great ideas. And they should be used wisely and often (in short doses). But to truly see where your market is going, it is important to get out and see other product/service providers and meet your consumers. This is were the “innovation tour” hits the ground.
An “innovation tour” is just like a band going on the road to see the sites and to play directly for the audience. It clears your mind and gives you direct access to your consumers and your competition. If you set up a good mix of speak engagements with tradeshows, innovator meetings, and product releases, your consumers will be able to give you feedback and get excited for the next wave you intend to send their way. Trust me, they want to ride that wave with you.
So as you plan your spring, summer or fall industry events, plan to hit the road a few more time to present your product/service to a few more consumers and even to some competitors and innovators. Getting and giving exposure may spark the next revolution in your industry. If you are at the pulse of it all, you will certainly feel the development in your favor. You won’t regret the exposure and you certainly will feel better in 2014.
