Dharmesh Shah, founder and CTO at HubSpot and Blogger at OnStartups.com, recently published the public beta version of HubSpot's "Culture Code" deck. In two different blog posts (see below) he shares why spending 200 hours on creating the culture deck was worth it, and why other founders should be mindful of their startup's culture:

  • "Culture helps make a large body of small decisions quicker -- and a small body of large decisions easier."
  • "Product is to marketing as culture is to recruiting. Just like attracting customers is much easier with a great product, attracting amazing people is much easier with a great culture."
  • "If you bring on people that aren't a fit, they'll infect other parts of the organization. Even after culture misfit hires move on, their corrosive effects on the company live on."
  • "Create the culture you want, not the one you think you should have."

"One of the common questions I get from my startup friends is how much time they should be spending on culture — given everything else going on (like you know, building a business). I'm not sure what the optimal number is — but I can say with confidence that the number is not zero."

~ Dharmesh Shah
