I recently had something happen that I never thought would happen. I was contacted by the World Economic Forum with the surprise news that I had been selected as a member of their 2014 class of Young Global Leaders (YGL). I am beyond honored or a wide variety of reasons, including the fact that I am joining 214 leaders from from 66 countries. Somehow, I'm getting a global introduction on a scale I never imagined, all from my little home office in Boulder, where I run my entirely virtual company, FlexJobs.
The opportunity to engage with such accomplished individuals, and to contribute on a more global level to issues surrounding employment and other critical topics, is amazing. Some of my other "classmates" include Charlize Theron (actress & activist), Jonah Peretti (co-founder/CEO of BuzzFeed), and Olivia Leland (director, Giving Partnerships at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation). To my knowledge, there is only one other Coloradoan currently in the YGL, although there are many in the New York City, Washington, DC, San Francisco, and other bigger cities.
As an entrepreneur, I've been focused on doing right for my little company since I started it seven years ago. I hadn't been looking at the global market, certainly hadn't been considering how I or my company looked from a global perspective. But the thing that makes this so interesting to me is that somehow what I was doing in Colorado got noticed by a leading international organization. Which makes me wonder, why I hadn't even considered dreaming of it before?
Being in Colorado might not not be as flashy as being in a big metropolitan city, but it doesn't mean that we can't accomplish on an international scale. "Dream big" is the lesson (or reminder) that this has given me, and that I wanted to share, for what it's worth.
