Database performance management is a heavy task, but it’s one that Boulder-based Confio has nearly perfected. That may be why 40 percent of Fortune 50 companies use the company’s award-winning products, and also why it was just acquired by Austin-based SolarWinds for $103 million in cash.

SolarWinds is a leading IT management that acquired the nine-year-old Boulder company to round out its product offerings, which serve systems administrators. Confio’s 70 employees will be joining SolarWinds. For the time being, Confio and its products will continue to be sold under their original names.

“The addition of Confio to the SolarWinds family provides a critical element to round out our product portfolio in support of this initiative," said Kevin Thompson, SolarWinds' President and CEO in a statement. “Like SolarWinds, the Confio team, led by Matt Larson, has built a reputation for delivering easy to use, purpose-built products to support IT teams as they respond to the rapidly-evolving technology and data needs of their businesses.”

Confio has received a multitude of accolades since its launch in 2004. Not only has the company appeared on the Inc.® 500/5000 and Deloitte® Technology Fast 500 lists, it was also named 2013’s Top Software Company by ColoradoBiz.

Looking ahead, SolarWinds and Confio will provide more information regarding future branding, product and integrations in the coming months. The companies’ representative informed me that they will not be released any additional comments until earnings are released on October 29, 2013.

By acquiring Confio and its award-winning Ignite platform, SolarWinds will be able to bolster its services to companies that need to run database systems faster and cheaper. This should enable them to do more in the realm of database management by expanding on existing IT management platforms.

As mentioned, database management is a heavy task — but with Confio and SolarWinds shouldering it together, the workload should be considerably lightened.
