AppDirect Acquires Boulder-based Standing Cloud

Cloud service marketplace company AppDirect announced today that it has acquired Standing Cloud, a Boulder-based company that is a leading provider of cloud management services. “Both AppDirect and Standing Cloud have worked to develop technologies that make the cloud easier to use. With this acquisition, we can join forces to accelerate the speed of innovation," said Daniel Saks, president and co-CEO of AppDirect.

Together the two companies will be able to offer a complete cloud marketplace and management solution. Standing Cloud has deployed services with various cloud partners including Amazon, Rackspace, Savvis and IBM. Meanwhile, AppDirect powers the marketplaces of some of the largest service providers in the world, including Staples, Deutsche Telekom, Appcelerator, Swisscom and Rackspace.

The two companies actually met via their respective partnerships with Rackspace. “It’s an example of how we have already been working together,” Saks said. “This acquisition will enable us to grow stronger and offer the best of both worlds--public and private cloud--to our partners.”

While AppDirect is headquartered in San Francisco, the Standing Cloud team will remain in Boulder, giving AppDirect a presence in the Colorado tech community. “We believe in the team and the people there, and we will continue to invest in Colorado,” said Saks. “The community there is very supportive and we look forward to having a second home in Boulder.”

Standing Cloud is funded by Foundry Group, and as part of the acquisition, AppDirect will become part of the firm’s portfolio of companies. Saks said that Brad Feld and the rest of the Foundry Group team have provided tremendous leadership and support.

The acquisition coincides with other exciting news for AppDirect. The company has closed its Series B round of funding, securing $9 million from existing investors. This funding along with the Standing Cloud acquisition will help AppDirect continue its rapid growth and capture more of the expanding global cloud computing market. In 2009, when both AppDirect and Standing Cloud were founded, the cloud computing services market was around $50 billion. Now it’s at $150 billion and predicted to grow to $241 billion by 2020.
