Colorado continues to establish itself as one of the nation's leaders in cleantech innovation. These five companies have separated themselves by developing exceptional products that make cleantech cheaper and more efficient.

Rachio:

Fact: nearly half of all water used for residential irrigation is wasted due to evaporation and wind run-off. In Colorado, we know that this is a huge problem in terms of water use efficiency. Rachio’s smart sprinkler controller, Iro, was designed to minimize water waste.

Winners of Startup Weekend Denver and the Colorado Innovation Challenge, the team at Rachio designed a sprinkler system that adjusts itself in real-time to changes in local weather to maximize the efficiency of your sprinklers. At work and its been raining all day? Iro can self-adjust to turn sprinklers off. The first shiping for Iro was extremely successful (causing a backorder) but the you can order one for the next shipment in June.

Concept3D:

Fresh off a $1.25 million funding round, Concept3D’s product Simuwatt is working to transform the multibillion dollar energy-retrofit business.

Simuwatt applies 3D modeling technology to the commercial energy audit business to make up for the conventional "clipboard and pencil" audit- which are drawn-out, expensive processes. Simuwatt’s auditor software package cuts down the time and cost on a traditional audit by 75%.

After creating a 3D model of the building with obtained data, the platform reports smart energy upgrades for your building. The product is currently in beta and expects hit the market later this year.

Tendril:

Tendril has been around for a decade, but has been looking a lot different over the past two years. That is because in 2012 CEO Adrian Tuck, faced with a tough decision, cut Tendril's employee base in half, got rid of its hardware division and restructured to focus around its Energy Services Management Platform. Since then, Tendril has flourished.

Under this platform, Tendril partners with utility companies to provide advanced segmentation and micro-targeting of high-energy users. Tendril ingests seven terabytes of consumption data each month and combines it with publicly available data to produce and send customized energy advice to those high-energy users, saving utility customers a lot of money.

WeatherCloud:

WeatherCloud used its own tech to develop crowdsourced weather reports to produce what they call “GroundTruth." Opposed to traditional weather reports which survey from satellites, GroundTruth provides weather and road conditions from the ground level.

By placing three sensors on your car, one on the tire, windshield, and bumper, WeatherCloud measures all important road info and sends it back to its database. From there the data is analyzed and packaged into precise road and weather descriptions. The data obtained provides more accurate road conditions and has the potential to improve road maintenance, logistical operations, and to help the everyday driver travel safer.

Snugghome:

Also in a retrofiting platform, but for the home, SnuggPro delivers detailed reports to homeowners on how to maximize energy efficiency in under 20 minutes. This is a huge step in changing individual's footprint in real-time.

By simply filling out the input fields like age of home, utility bills and thermostat set-points, Snuggpro gives financial details, step by step solutions and additional advice to the homeowner. The software platform has performed more than 5,000 home-energy audits
