“Google for Entrepreneurs” held training sessions and workshops on Tuesday for local entrepreneurs, developers and others from the startup community. More than 300 people took part in the free, all day event at Galvanize in Denver.
Sure, Google is now a massive corporation with a global reach, but not so long ago (relatively speaking), it was a plucky startup on a mission to "organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." Staying true to its entrepreneurial roots, Google continues to push, innovate and improve. At the event, Mary Grove, Google’s Director for Entrereneurship, spoke on the importance of being an “industry disrupter.”
How do you disrupt an industry? Here are a few key points from Grove’s presentation:
Focus on the user. The rest will follow.
How can you stand out among the 30 trillion urls? It begins by thinking from the user’s perspective. What do people need? Solve their problems in new and innovative ways--you stand out by pushing the status quo. Google pushed an entire industry forward by providing a model. To be disruptive, you have to take risks and be willing to lead.
Grow your community.
Online communities are increasingly important, as people are now more likely to communicate digitally than face-to-face. People share and connect around lifestyle and interests rather than products, but this naturally leads to purchasing recommendations and decisions as well. Since 78 percent of consumers trust peer recommendations, it’s critical to deepen your community, identify and engage your top influencers.
Think globally.
It’s a wide, wide world out there, and it pays to acknowledge the global marketplace and the many undiscovered opportunities that exist. Tapping into more markets means making a better product, faster, and lowering the barriers to entry. As Grove emphasized, expanding your market also requires being data-driven and “empowered by data.” And after all, it’s hard to argue with Google when it comes to data.
