The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the federal agency responsible for granting patents and registering trademarks, will be officially opening its satellite office in Denver June 30.

The office, which is just one of four offices outside of the agency’s Alexandria, Virginia headquarters, will create over 100 jobs for intellectual property experts and will provide resources for innovators and investors. The opening of the office is essential to Colorado’s innovative tech scene, Colorado Technology Association CEO Erik Mitisek said.

“This deepens our roots as an entrepreneurial hub and hot spot,” Mitisek said. “Colorado is consistently placed on lists such as one of the ‘10 Top Places for Entrepreneurship and Innovation’ and the USPTO Satellite office will only solidify Colorado's brand as a renowned foundation for innovation, technology and economic growth.”

USPTO made the decision to locate the office in Denver about two years ago. Last year, several patent judges set up shop in a temporary office in Lakewood as they awaited their permanent home in the Byron G. Rogers Federal Building. Once the permanent office opens this month, the USPTO’s goal is to fill the office with about 20 patent judges and about 100 patent examiners. The growing USPTO team, Mitisek said, will “support Colorado's vibrant economy that secures Colorado as a center for entrepreneurial activity and technological leadership."
