Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us—one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. We are a media network that showcases stories, voices, and opportunities for activism that inform, entertain, and inspire action, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world.
Job Summary:
Crooked Media is seeking a Newsletter Writer/Washington Correspondent who will be responsible for writing What A Day, Crooked Media’s mission-driven newsletter AND joining our podcasts with smart takes from DC. Successful candidates must be strong reporters who can write clearly about a wide range of current events on deadline; nimbly grab comment from policymakers; and efficiently synthesize the daily news into witty and accessible summaries for both newsletter and podcast audiences. We are looking for someone with a sense of fun, even in the midst of intense news cycles.
Crooked has adopted a hybrid work model for our entire staff. We believe that the best work is done in a hybrid capacity as it combines the flexibility of working from home with in person collaboration. We are looking for DC based candidates, or candidates willing to relocate within the first 3 months of accepting an offer.
How You’ll Spend Your Time:
- Track daily political news cycles across a diverse array of outlets and verticals as they develop
- Report for Crooked’s daily news products, including the What A Day newsletter and podcast
- Write the daily newsletter in a way that captures the informative, entertaining, and mission-driven voice of Crooked Media
- Join the What A Day podcast host/s for pre-recorded audio and video segments on a regular basis (potentially 2-3 times a week). Join other Crooked podcasts on an as needed basis
- Jump-in during breaking news events
- Work with the daily news team to track and share news developments internally and to the broader audience
- Work directly with the news editor to publish the newsletter each day by 5pm ET
What You’ll Bring To The Table:
- Experience reporting on Capitol Hill and or the White House
- Comfort producing content across platforms: print, audio and video
- A sense of humor
- A collaborative approach
- Able and willing to work flexible hours, under tight deadline pressure, including breaking news
- Self-motivated, reliably able to hit deadlines
Pay and Perks:
At Crooked, we believe in paying employees at or above market rates that are informed by salary surveys and industry benchmarks. In addition to competitive salaries, we offer full-time employees excellent benefits including:
- Paid healthcare
- 401k match
- Generous vacation
- 16 weeks of paid parental leave
- A discretionary year-end bonus
- Did we also mention our offices are closed at the end of the year?
When we open up a position, we conduct a market analysis to ensure we have the most up-to-date data. Once we’re ready to extend an offer, we look at the individual’s years of relevant experience and other compensable factors to determine a competitive offer. And for this role, the starting salary range is $90,000 - $105,000.
About Us
We welcome everyone—as an inclusive workplace, we invite all our employees to bring their authentic, whole selves to work. Our mission and intent is to encourage people from every nation, race/ethnicity, belief, gender, gender identity, sexual identity, disability, and culture to feel respected and valued for their unique contributions to our company.
We approach our work courageously, adapt and improve constantly, and celebrate the wins big and small. We cultivate a culture of creativity and expression at Crooked Media. We hire the best talent, ensure they have the tools and training they need, and set them free. If you have a high degree of ownership and are driven to excel, you’ll fit right in.
That’s it. End of mission.
What We Do
In 2016, a sane conversation about politics was most needed but hardest to find. Cable news panels, you may have noticed, are not the best.
Twitter is a great place to slowly lose your mind. Everywhere, the work of excellent journalists competes with click-bait, fake news, and whatever Donald Trump is tweeting about. We need a better conversation about politics in this country. That’s why we launched Crooked Media — to talk about politics in a way that doesn’t make you want to throw your phone out the window – with shows and analysis and other forms of sweet, sweet content that inform, entertain, and inspire action. No, we’re not unbiased, we’re not always serious and we’re certainly not always right. But we promise a no-bullshit conversation about politics and culture where you can laugh, cry, scream, ridicule us daily, share your ideas, and hopefully decide that you want to help fix this mess too. That’s it. End of mission.
