About the position
We are looking for a seasoned product designer to join our diverse and passionate team of designers, product managers, engineers, marketers, and editors to help shape a product loved by millions of readers around the world. You will help solve interesting design problems, participate in a collaborative design process, and apply your creativity to a wide range of projects.
Here’s an example of what someone can expect to accomplish in their first year in the position:
- Gain a robust understanding of our customers, both authors and readers, to be able to center their motivations, goals, and latent needs throughout the design process
- Work across the entire design lifecycle to deliver opinionated solutions that connect authors with readers who will love their books
- Apply design thinking methodologies to build shared understanding, foster active and critical debate, and champion the best ideas
- Cultivate a pragmatic approach to product design by continuously seeking the right balance between quality and efficiency
- Help to grow and maintain a consistent, scalable design system to facilitate effective collaboration between design and engineering
- Serve as a mentor and coach to other designers, regularly providing useful and constructive feedback and cultivating UX knowledge and growth of practitioners, both on design and other adjacent teams
An ideal candidate for this position will:
- Be a design generalist with proven experience in generating solutions that reduce complexity and cognitive load, while delivering meaningful value to users
- Be able to independently conceptualize the work to be done, steps to get there, and to execute those steps
- Understand the power of storytelling in design, and how to use visual elements to create a narrative for your audience, be it stakeholders, colleagues, readers, or authors
- Be energized by a startup environment in which the company is iterating quickly, and priorities and direction may change frequently
- Be data-driven and strive to improve your design based on metrics, analytics, and research, but also regularly solicit feedback from colleagues
- Demonstrate an excellent technical understanding of the software, tools, and techniques needed in your daily work, including a number of graphic design and prototyping tools, know when to employ them in your work, and know when to introduce new tools and systems to the team
- Have a portfolio of representative work in product design that illustrates your process, outcomes, and impact
