About Buildings + Places:
Our Buildings + Places practice includes architecture, interiors, building and system engineering, urbanism and planning (inclusive of landscape design), strategy +, economics, technology solutions, asset advisory, and cost and program management. This diverse team assists our clients from strategy through project realization, creating positive outcomes for those who occupy and use the buildings and environments we help to create. Our Chicago studio focuses on the Commercial/Corporate, Science and Technology, Higher Education and Federal market sectors. We look to combine beauty, sustainability, resiliency, equity, and innovation in our projects and believe these values can be instilled in any project regardless of size or budget.
Some of our recent projects include the new LA Clippers Arena, the Chicago Riverwalk , Autonomous Vehicle R&D Facilities, neighborhood resilience plans, cutting edge scientific research facilities, and global headquarters.
Job Summary/Responsibilities:
Senior Specification Writer will utilize knowledge of construction products, materials, and methods to write specifications for a variety of complex projects and building types which may include commercial office, education, healthcare, science and technology, and other diverse building types. The selected individual will have a good working knowledge of building codes and construction materials and techniques.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Leads the specifications writing and management for multiple projects
- Will work to identify LEED, and other sustainability measurement methods in their work
- Work as a collaborative member of a team and assist staff in the preparation of contract documents
- This position will use their multi-discipline knowledge of architecture to interact with the teams in multiple offices to develop detailed, project specific specifications
- Will review drawings and other project information to write and edit project specifications
- Uses thorough understanding of project design requirements to translate project needs
- Maintains awareness of industry reference standards and resources.
- Propose continual development and improvement of master specifications including it specialized content for project type or regional conditions as well as sustainable content, based on project work.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Engineering or a related field + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- 10+ years of relevant experience with 5 years of experience in specification writing.
- Good working knowledge of building codes and construction materials and techniques.
- Architectural Licensure.
- Be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines - phases, milestone deliveries and various project delivery types.
- Knowledge of specification formats - Masterformat, Uniformat and narrative approaches.
- Strong experience with MS Office software.
- Good working knowledge of recent contract laws as it applies to construction.
- Knowledgeable of LEED, and other sustainability measurement methods.
- Strong communication skills.
