Flatiron Japan is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Engineer to join our small startup team in Tokyo. We are in need of a technologist who is passionate about healthcare and the potential for real-world evidence to accelerate cancer research and accomplish our mission to improve and extend lives by learning from the experience of every person with cancer. Are you ready to be the next changemaker in cancer care?
Flatiron Health is a healthtech company using data for good to power smarter care for every person with cancer around the world. Flatiron partners with cancer centers in the US, Europe and Asia to transform patients' real-life experiences into real-world evidence and create a more modern, connected oncology ecosystem. Our multidisciplinary teams include oncologists, data scientists, software engineers, epidemiologists, product experts, and more. Flatiron Health is an independent affiliate of the Roche Group.
What You'll Do
One of the keys to learning from the experience of every person with cancer is transforming raw data about patient journeys into a form that is both accurate in its contents and usable for analysis in its structure. We welcome engineers with a strong platform orientation, aspiring architects, passionate backend engineers who aren't afraid to flex into more generalist skill sets when needed, engineers that are enthusiastic about data, and emerging engineering leaders. As an engineer you will:

  • Lead the design and implementation of features and platforms for building Flatiron's data products across our global markets
  • Be comfortable driving projects independently, while proactively reaching out for help and additional resources when needed to keep yourself unblocked
  • Collaborate with Engineers across all our global locations to understand their data engineering needs and make our platforms easy for them to build and test on top of
  • Work to understand our business needs so as to better support our global teams in meeting their goals
  • Maintain a constant focus on data privacy and security
  • Rapidly iterate on MVP-stage features and products while keeping an eye towards extracting learnings to inform our long-term platform roadmap
  • Promote technical best practices with teammates and serve as a design partner to both senior and junior colleagues
  • Flex your engineering capabilities outside of your comfort zone when necessary and be unafraid to work on unfamiliar problems and with new technologies

Who You Are
You're a software engineer with 4+ years of experience developing robust and scalable solutions, especially in platform spaces. You're passionate about solving real-world problems with proven technologies and building elegant, scalable systems. You write simple, sophisticated, well-structured and well tested code that drives new features and improvements.

  • You have experience leading the design and implementation of projects in complex spaces that require buy-in from multiple engineering teams and groups of stakeholders.
  • You have worked in a collaborative agile development environment using languages like SQL, Python, and C#, and you are enthusiastic about learning.
  • You have experience working with ETL and ELT technologies like dbt, as well as with designing and setting up the infrastructure for data processing systems using cloud providers like AWS and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform.
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity - you're able to quickly develop hypotheses with limited information and have a demonstrated ability to learn complex concepts quickly.
  • You are fluent (or professional-level) in English. Japanese language ability is a definite plus, but not necessary.
  • You are excited to work in a small-team environment and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. You have an entrepreneurial spirit, "get it done" mentality, a nose for value and empathy for your customer.
  • You are an effective communicator who is equally comfortable telling a compelling story to stakeholders, clinicians, engineers and customers.

You're excited by the prospect of rolling up your sleeves and using technology to tackle meaningful problems each and every day. You're a kind, passionate and collaborative problem-solver who seeks and gives honest feedback and values the opportunity to improve the lives of cancer patients.
If this sounds like you, you'll fit right in at Flatiron.
