About the RoleJoin our RTC (Real-Time Communication) backend services team at GoTo Meeting and contribute to cutting-edge testing infrastructure that ensures seamless online meeting experiences for millions of users worldwide. We're seeking an advanced student developer to enhance our testing framework with network degradation capabilities, transitioning from legacy solutions to modern, cloud-native approaches.
Your Mission
You'll spearhead the integration of network degradation testing into our new Kubernetes-based testing framework. Currently, we rely on an in-house solution for network degradation tests within our end-to-end testing suite. Your task is to research, design, and implement an alternative based on open-source tools that seamlessly integrates with our existing infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:- Research and evaluate open-source network degradation tools (including iptables, pumba, netem, and emerging solutions)
- Document findings and recommend optimal approaches for our use case
- Design and implement network traffic blocking capabilities as the initial milestone
- Extend functionality to support bandwidth limitations and advanced network conditions
- Integrate solutions into our TypeScript-based testing framework
- Collaborate with the team to migrate remaining test cases from the legacy system
- Framework: TypeScript-based testing infrastructure
- Infrastructure: Kubernetes clusters on AWS and OCI
- OS: Ubuntu Linux environment
- Current Tools: Transitioning from AWS VM-based architecture to cloud-native solutions
- Approach: Client/server node-level network degradation (moving away from dedicated router nodes)
- Currently enrolled Master's student (or equivalent) at a German university
- Strong autonomous working skills and problem-solving mindset
- Solid TypeScript development experience
- Proficiency with git as modern version control system
- Basic Linux networking knowledge and command-line proficiency
- Kubernetes and containerization experience preferred
- Fluent English (German is a plus but not required)
- EU work authorization or valid German work permit for students
Preferred:
- Experience with network testing tools or chaos engineering
- Understanding of distributed systems and microservices
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (OCI, AWS, or similar)
- Knowledge of C++ (helpful but not essential)
- Competitive compensation: €16/hour for 20 hours/week
- Flexible duration: October 2025 - December 2026
- Complete setup: All necessary hardware, software, and AI coding assistants provided
- Hybrid approach: minimum of 2-3 office days per week in Dresden with remote flexibility
- Mentorship: Dedicated local supervisor and integration with our experienced team
