BioMarin's Technical Operations group is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. These engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff build and maintain BioMarin's cutting-edge manufacturing processes and sites, provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to support manufacturing and coordinating the worldwide movement of our drugs to patients.
Sr. Specialist, EHS&S
Position description
The EHS&S Sr. Specialist supports the overall BioMarin Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHS&S) operations, with a focus on environmental compliance policies and procedures across multiple business functions.
This position will report directly to a Senior Manager with a responsibility to implement environmental, health and safety programs and procedures and will function as the EHS&S representative on various cross-functional projects. At the discretion of the EHS&S manager, this role may also support other safety, health and environmental services to the company including: incident management, comprehensive risk assessments & JHAs, stakeholder engagement and other department initiatives. The incumbent will communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and function as a positive influence on people and processes.
This position is based in BioMarin's corporate headquarters located in San Rafael, California.
This position is not offered as a fully remote role, but a hybrid role may be considered.
Key responsibilities
- General
- Directly support a EHS&S Senior Manager including identifying and addressing compliance gaps
- Develop environmental compliance policies, procedures, training, and written programs/plans
- Provide strategic support to stakeholders to reduce environmental compliance risks
- Reviews new or proposed changes to site facilities, equipment, materials, or operations to determine all necessary EHS&S requirements are addressed
- Coordinates and conducts safety audits/inspections
- Provide support to training and program development
- Provide INTELEX incident management system support
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners/stakeholders
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
- Use EHS&S and company software systems effectively
- Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor
- Environmental Compliance SME
- Serve as a subject matter expert for air, water and waste compliance programs including but not limited Hazardous Waste, Medical Waste, Industrial Wastewater and Stormwater
- Serve as document owner for the environmental management program
- Reviews, updates and/or develops EHS&S policies and procedures
- Establish, update, and manage programs for compliance with state and local regulations
- Manage and/or conduct compliance audits and inspections
- Recommend and work with stakeholders to implement solutions and best practices
- Collaborate directly with internal partners and stakeholders
- Collaborate directly with external consultants, contractors, vendors, and regulatory personnel
Experience
REQUIRED SKILLS
- 8-10 years prior experience with bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Management, or relevant discipline
- Experience managing EHS programs and providing EHS services
- Comprehensive knowledge of EHS regulations, procedures, and business practices
- Subject matter expertise and demonstrated knowledge of regulations
- Demonstrated experience in working with cross functional teams
- Demonstrated ability to influence relevant site management, customers, and stakeholders, as appropriate, and to drive environmental culture improvements
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong public speaking skills to present at stakeholder, all-hands meetings, and training sessions
DESIRED SKILLS
- Prior experience with California regulatory agencies and regulations.
- Prior experience in a biopharmaceutical setting.
- Prior experience managing environmental programs at an industrial or research facility

Qualification guidelines
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) is required.
- Professional certification such as CHMM, CEM, CBSP, etc. (Desirable)

TRAVEL
- Up to 25% domestic and international travel may be required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
• No direct reports but may manage the performance of contractors and vendors and will advise/direct other employees.
