Join our Reliability team at Colorado’s largest refinery—the state’s sole petroleum refinery and a critical energy hub for the Rocky Mountain region. Engineering backgrounds may vary, but this role is typically suited for Materials or Mechanical Engineers.
As part of a busy team of experienced professionals, you will provide technical support to ensure reliable and efficient operations.
You will lead efforts to meet reliability targets and drive asset improvement by applying Operational Discipline, Process Safety Management (PSM), and Suncor's Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS). You’ll uphold engineering and industry best practices, adhering to Suncor’s technical standards and applicable codes.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical, Materials, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (preferred).
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in heavy industry (refining or petrochemicals preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of API/NACE standards (e.g., API 571, 581; NACE MR0175, etc.).
  • Experience with Fitness-for-Service calculations, welding, coatings, and damage mechanism evaluation and identification.
  • Familiarity with SAP or Asset Performance Management (APM) systems is valuable.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical investigations and influence stakeholders.
  • Commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and operational discipline.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Legal authorization to work in the USA for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure integrity of static equipment is maintained and improved through Reliability Group and Inspection programs and procedures.
  • Own and optimize site-wide integrity modeling (e.g., RBI, CCD, IOW, APM data models), with accountability for maintaining model accuracy, driving risk re-ranking, and optimizing inspection and mitigation plans across units.
  • Act as Corrosion Control Documentation (CCD) and Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) Program Manager.
  • Monitor effectiveness of reliability and maintenance programs; recommend and implement changes for continuous improvement.
  • Analyze equipment performance reports and corrosion tracking data to identify and implement opportunities for improvement and support for emerging corrosion threats.
  • Ensure compliance with inspection and mechanical integrity programs for static equipment, in accordance with legal requirements and corporate standards.
  • Support operations and maintenance departments; act as technical expert for field maintenance personnel during repair work.
  • Provide mentorship to inspectors and other mechanical/materials engineers.
  • Monitor and measure asset performance; ensure asset performance and strategy effectiveness measurements are fully integrated into asset strategies and maintenance programs.
  • Perform quality control and/or quality assurance tasks for repair work and new installations.
  • Manage Material Testing Reports (MTRs), material traceability, Positive Material Identification (PMI) program, and acceptance prior to fabrication.
  • Apply appropriate equipment operating condition detection techniques (e.g., vibration analysis, multivariate trending, infrared, ultrasonic, etc.).
  • Compile a list of repetitive failures and remedy their causes through the application of failure analysis techniques.
  • Organize and manage data compilation (thicknesses, equipment history, recommendations) and steward reporting that links risk, cost, and availability outcomes.

Location and other Key Details:

  • You will work out of our Commerce City refinery, located at 5801 Brighton Blvd.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • In alignment with Suncor’s value of Safety Above All Else, we conduct pre-employment drug testing, employment verification, education verification, background checks, and other pre-employment assessments as a condition of employment.

Salary and Compensation Details: 

  • $115,000 to $150,000 annual salary and an annual incentive (bonus) program
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
