Job Description SummaryGE Aerospace is seeking a highly skilled Senior Manufacturing Engineer specializing in coatings for aerospace and defense applications to join our team. In this role, you will lead the development, optimization, and implementation of advanced coating processes for critical aerospace components, ensuring compliance with industry standards and delivering measurable improvements in Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost (SQDC). You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to support new product introductions, drive continuous improvement, and ensure the highest performance and durability of coated components.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Coating Process Development:

  • Design, develop, and optimize coating processes, including thermal spray coatings, physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and plasma coatings.
  • Ensure coatings meet stringent aerospace and defense requirements for wear resistance, corrosion protection, thermal insulation, and environmental durability.
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, including work instructions, standard operating procedures, and technical specifications.

Technical Leadership:

  • Provide expertise in advanced coating technologies, including ceramic coatings, metallic coatings, and polymeric coatings.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for coating-related manufacturing challenges, such as adhesion issues, surface preparation, and coating uniformity.
  • Stay updated on emerging coating technologies and materials relevant to aerospace and defense applications.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify and implement lean manufacturing principles to improve coating process efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance productivity.
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions for coating defects or process deviations.
  • Collaborate with the FLIGHT DECK team to align with GE Aerospace’s proprietary lean operating model.

New Product Introduction (NPI):

  • Support the introduction of new products by developing robust coating processes for new designs and materials.
  • Partner with design engineering teams to ensure manufacturability and performance of coated components.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments for new coating technologies.
  • Oversee MRL development.

Compliance and Quality Assurance:

  • Ensure all coating processes comply with aerospace and defense industry standards, including NADCAP, AS9100, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Develop and implement quality control measures, including non-destructive testing (NDT) and coating thickness measurement.
  • Promote a culture of safety and ensure adherence to all safety protocols.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including design engineering, quality, supply chain, and operations.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Communicate technical updates and project progress to stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university + minimum of 5 years of manufacturing engineering experience
  • Due to the nature of the duties of this position, this role requires the individual to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship

Desired Characteristics

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, with a focus on coatings for aerospace and defense applications.
  • Technical Expertise:
    • In-depth knowledge of coating processes, including thermal spray, PVD, CVD, and plasma coatings.
    • Familiarity with aerospace materials, including superalloys, titanium, and composite substrates.
    • Proficiency in process simulation tools and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Certifications: NADCAP certification in coating processes is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
    • Proficiency in lean manufacturing principles and tools.
