The Role
  • You bring hands-on technical expertise and leadership, guiding a small, high-impact team to prototype, test, and build platform capabilities that matter.

  • We thrive on curiosity and modern engineering practices, staying ahead of emerging technologies to unlock faster, smarter innovation.

  • Together we will shape engineering direction in partnership with Product and Design, bringing clarity to ambiguous problems and turning ideas into working solutions

Do work that matters

The CIO for Technology team ensures that CommBank is at the forefront of technology, using innovative and emerging technology to help our customer and support our Group Strategy.

We work hard to ensure that best practice, whether inside CommBank or outside in the broader technology ecosystem, is discovered, sheltered, nurtured, and spread to wherever else it can drive the most benefit for the Group and our customers.

See yourself in our team

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will be a hands-on technical leader, defining the teams’ technical roadmap and fostering a world-class engineering culture of innovation and curiosity.

You will lead a small, high-impact engineering team within the Product Discovery & Experimentation group. This role is central to how the team helps the organisation innovate faster - building prototypes, proofs of concept, and pilot solutions in partnership with business units, while also shaping tools and technologies that accelerate discovery and testing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a small, adaptable engineering team focused on discovery, experimentation, and rapid prototyping.

  • Work closely with Product and Design leaders in a triad model to shape, test, and deliver solutions.

  • Contribute to solution design and technical feasibility, not just delivery.

  • Stay hands-on with modern tools while coaching and uplifting engineering practices.

  • Ensure security, scalability, and quality are built into prototypes and pilots from the outset.

  • Partner with business units and stakeholders to align on priorities and deliver measurable outcomes.

  • Scan emerging technologies and vendors to bring fresh capabilities into the organisation.

  • Foster a culture of creativity, curiosity, and continuous improvement in engineering.

We are interested in people who

  • Are naturally curious and thrive in ambiguous problem spaces, shaping solutions as well as testing feasibility.

  • Can balance hands-on technical leadership with coaching and empowering a small team.

  • Keep their finger on the pulse of modern engineering practices and emerging technologies and know when to apply them.

  • Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences, translating complexity into simplicity.

  • Are outcome-focused, ensuring engineering work leads to validated customer and business value.

  • Build strong, trusted relationships across teams and stakeholders, creating alignment and shared ownership.

Technical Skills & Experience

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these (or equivalents) will set you up for success in this team;

  • Extensive experience in software engineering, with recent years in a leadership role.

  • Proven experience delivering platforms, prototypes, or complex technical solutions.

  • Hands-on proficiency with programming languages: React.js, Next.js, Typescript, GraphQL

  • Strong technical literacy across modern architectures: cloud, APIs, event-driven systems, and data integration.

  • Experience leading teams through platform delivery or capability-building initiatives.

  • Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD, and scalable cloud-native environments.

  • Skilled in agile product development and lean experimentation practices.
