Job Description

To be the AWS cloud engineering subject matter expert across multiple cloud capabilities linked to AWS platform engineering, including AI, DevOps, Compute, networking and databases. The individual will also ensure that the Standard Bank AWS cloud environment is continuously evolving to best practice, adopting new AWS features at scale and enabling feature teams to deploy innovative solutions for our customers.

The AWS senior cloud engineer will also be the service owner for core AWS platform enablement capabilities, ensuring our services are compliant to SBG standards, principles, policies, and regulatory obligations in a manner that enables our business strategy. The AWS senior cloud engineer will also be consulting partner for our application teams that have deployed workloads in cloud and also to product owners across the organization. The role includes partnering and engage proactively with AWS architecture team, AWS enterprise support and the AWS product team/ services team to ensure we keep up with new AWS features and service launches, while continuously improving and evolving existing AWS services.

The role also involves collaborating and operating across several countries, business units and feature teams across the Standard Bank Group. The AWS senior cloud engineer will be required to proactively engage with peers (including the Platform and security leads), internal stakeholders and report to relevant forums & steerco. Additionally, the senior engineer must build relationships and manage delivery & SLAs with our 3rd party providers, including our cloud service providers. From a people perspective, the senior cloud engineer must mentor junior cloud engineers, coordinate and guide engineers on delivery of the agreed strategic objectives and provide coaching & mentoring to their team. This will also include putting appropriate plans for knowledge sharing and showcasing new features / services.

Experience Required
Software Engineering

  • 8-10 years of solid Integration and IT background, consistently keeping up to date with advancements in the field. Proven track record to a broad spectrum of stakeholders including senior executives. Knowledge of Agile and Lean frameworks, methods and practices and experience in being a catalyst for organizational change. Experience working with cross-functional teams fostering collaboration and teamwork. Good understanding of the Standard Bank IT environment
  • 8-10 years' experience in the full lifecycle design and development covering solution design, application design, development, testing and maintenance, network software, operating systems, multi-tier environments, desktop and workgroup software, middleware, server technology, fault tolerant environments, development tools
  • Experience in working on AWS and/or cloud platform engineering space. Having worked on AWS and/or Azure cloud environment where AWS and/or Azure managed services played a role will be advantageous.
  • Experience and knowledge of deploying and supporting workloads on AWS and/or Azure following the well architected framework.
  • Strong cloud platform engineering background with deep AWS expertise, including enterprise-scale landing zones and Control Tower implementations.
  • Practical experience designing, implementing, and maintaining multi-account AWS environments with governance guardrails and account vending pipelines.
  • Strong understanding of AWS networking concepts including VPC design, Transit Gateways, Direct Connect, Direct Connect Gateway, and hybrid connectivity patterns.
  • Experience implementing platform-level IAM, permission boundaries, SCP frameworks, and preventative controls aligned to enterprise security standards.
  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code using CloudFormation and/or terraform, including CI/CD-driven infrastructure deployment patterns.
  • Experience managing shared platform services such as EKS, API Gateway, service mesh, secrets management, and centralized observability tooling.
  • Ability to interpret and implement architectural standards defined by Enterprise Architects, translating strategy into reliable engineering solutions.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills, including platform roadmap development, technical debt remediation, and operational optimization.
  • Proven leadership and people-management capability, including mentoring senior engineers, guiding delivery, and engaging senior stakeholders.
